What sellers say

Corey sold us his LandCruiser from Melbourne and had a deposit in his account that night. Selling a CX-5 works the same way. Here are three sellers in their own words.

Within 10 minutes of my enquiry I was contacted by Dean. It all happened in less than an hour from the initial enquiry. I had a deposit in my bank account that night.

Corey K Toyota LandCruiser 200 Series VX, Melbourne VIC
  • “No haggling, or dealerships trying to get a lower price. In less than 3 business days I had an inspection completed, my car sold, with funds cleared in my bank account.”

Rahul A Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 Coupe, Sylvania NSW
  • “They helped me through the transaction of a high value car and made it very pleasant. From paperwork and working with the lenders, to a personal touch.”

Sell Your Car Australia is run by Autohaus Australia Pty Ltd, so some reviews mention Autohaus Australia.

How selling your CX-5 works

Four steps. Your part takes about a minute, and you are paid before the car leaves your driveway.

  1. Tell us about your car

Make, model, year and kilometres. A minute on the form, or a quick call.

  2. Get a genuine offer

We call you, check a few details and make a cash offer. Accept it or walk away.

  3. Get paid

A deposit once you accept. The balance lands in your account after an inspection.

  4. We collect the car

Only after your funds have cleared, from your home or work, anywhere in Australia.

What affects your CX-5's value

No online estimate knows which CX-5 you have. These are the things a valuer asks about, and what you can do about each of them.

  • Engine

The 2.5 turbo and 2.2 diesel aren't offered in the new CX-5, which is petrol only. Tell us which engine yours has. No published data yet shows that either now sells for more, so be wary of anyone promising a premium.

  • 2021 car or 2022 update

The facelifted CX-5 arrived in early 2022 with new styling and a reshuffled range. Buyers compare like with like, so the year it was first sold and the grade name both matter.

  • Grade and drive

A GT SP or Akera is priced against other GT SPs and Akeras of a similar age. Drive matters too: from 2022 the Maxx was front-wheel drive only, and every grade from the Touring up was all-wheel drive.

  • Kilometres

Lower kilometres for the year generally mean a stronger offer. We buy CX-5s with 100,000 km or less, and you can send a higher-kilometre car through anyway.

  • Service history

A full logbook with invoices shows the car has been looked after. Explain any gaps on the call. More in does service history affect car value.

  • Recalls and warranty

Search your VIN for open recalls before you sell. Mazda's warranty is five years with unlimited kilometres, so a CX-5 first sold in 2021 is at or near the end of it. See whether remaining warranty adds value.

Selling a CX-5: what to know

What buyers ask, which updates matter, and how the new model changes the picture.

What we ask about your CX-5

A CX-5 offer starts with four details: the grade, the engine, the drive and the kilometres. After that, it comes down to history and condition. Have these answers ready and the call is quicker, and the inspection holds fewer surprises.

What we ask Where to find it
Grade, such as Touring or GT SP Purchase contract or service book
Engine and drive Purchase contract, or a Mazda dealer can check the VIN
Year first sold Purchase contract
Kilometres Your odometer
Service history Logbook stamps and invoices
Open recalls A VIN search on the government recall site
Finance owing A payout figure from your lender

It’s the same list any careful buyer works through, privately or at a dealership. They check the logbook stamps against the odometer, look at the tyres and alloy wheels for wear and kerb marks, and ask for both keys.

Which CX-5 do you have?

Every CX-5 sold new from 2021 until the new model arrived is the second-generation car, known as the KF. Its range changed twice in that time. Buyers compare like with like, so it helps to know which version you have.

Sold new Grades Engines
2021 Maxx, Maxx Sport, Touring, GT, GT SP, Akera 2.0 and 2.5 petrol, 2.5 turbo, 2.2 diesel
2022 to 2023 Maxx, Maxx Sport, Touring, Touring Active, GT SP, Akera 2.0 and 2.5 petrol, 2.5 turbo, 2.2 diesel
From the 2024 update Maxx, Maxx Sport, Touring, GT SP, Akera 2.0 and 2.5 petrol, 2.5 turbo
New generation, 2026 Pure, Evolve, Touring, GT SP, Akera 2.5 petrol only

CarExpert reported that the 2021 range went on sale in February 2021 and that the facelifted range arrived in early January 2022. It also reported that the diesel and the Touring Active were dropped for 2024, with deliveries of that range from January 2024.

Dealers can keep selling earlier stock after an update, so a car first sold in early 2022 could be either version. The grade name often settles it. The GT only appears before the update, and the Touring Active only after it.

Grades and engines that matter

The engine is the first thing a CX-5 buyer asks about. Four were offered in the KF:

  • 2.0 petrol: 115kW and 200Nm, front-wheel drive.
  • 2.5 petrol: 140kW and 252Nm, offered across most of the range.
  • 2.5 turbo-petrol: 170kW and 420Nm, all-wheel drive. From 2022 it came only in the GT SP and Akera.
  • 2.2 turbo-diesel: 140kW and 450Nm, all-wheel drive. Mazda told CarExpert it made up less than four per cent of CX-5 sales before it was dropped.

Buyers link the GT SP and Akera with the turbo, but both were also sold with the 2.5 petrol. So put the grade and the engine in the same sentence when you describe the car. In the 2022 range, CarExpert listed 19-inch black metallic wheels, a sunroof and Bose audio on the GT SP. The Akera added Nappa leather, real wood trim and ventilated seats.

Drive matters as much as grade. From the 2022 update, the Maxx was front-wheel drive only, the Maxx Sport came with either, and every grade above it was all-wheel drive. A buyer who wants all-wheel drive will skip a front-wheel-drive car, so be clear about yours.

Recalls, warranty and records

Search your VIN on the government’s vehicle recalls site before you sell. Dealers and careful buyers run the same search. Recall work is done free at a Mazda dealer, so book anything still open and keep the job card. Our guide to checking for open recalls explains how to read the results.

Mazda’s warranty page describes five years with unlimited kilometres, but it doesn’t say whether the balance passes to the next owner. If the cover started when the car was first sold, a 2021 CX-5 is at or near the end of it, and the cover on a 2022 car runs into 2027. Check the start date in your service book, and ask Mazda before you rely on it in a sale.

A complete logbook with invoices is the strongest record you have. If there are gaps, explain them on the call rather than leaving them for the inspection.

When to sell: the new CX-5 is here

Mazda Australia announced the third-generation CX-5 in March 2026 and said it expected the car to arrive mid-year. Its Australian website now features the new model. Every grade has a 2.5-litre petrol engine, a six-speed automatic and all-wheel drive. CarExpert reported that the turbo has been axed globally, and that a hybrid is confirmed for Australia with timing yet to be announced.

For a KF owner, the new model changes the comparison a buyer makes, not the car itself. Changes to new-car line-ups and prices tend to flow through to used prices, in either direction. No published data yet shows how far the new CX-5 has moved used KF values, so treat confident predictions with caution.

Your own timeline usually matters more than the market. These are the points worth watching:

  • The odometer is getting close to 100,000 km.
  • A major logbook service is coming up.
  • The factory warranty is ending.
  • A balloon payment on your loan is due.
  • You need a bigger car, or a different one.

Selling a CX-5 with finance owing

You can sell a CX-5 that’s still under finance. If you owe money on it, the lender’s interest shows on the PPSR, so the loan has to be paid out at or before the sale. When you sell to us, we deal with your lender directly to pay out the loan, then pay you any equity. That usually takes 2 to 3 business days to settle.

Ask your lender for a payout figure before you call, so you can set it against the offer. If you owe more than the car is worth, the difference has to be covered before settlement. Our page on selling a car under finance covers the steps.

We prepare the sale paperwork and help with the transfer of ownership. We’ll also make sure your notice of disposal is done correctly. In most states it’s a quick online form. Usually no roadworthy or safety certificate is needed when you sell to us, but rules differ by state, and we confirm what applies on the call.

How selling your CX-5 to us works

The order never changes. You get a genuine offer by phone from a licensed dealer, not an online estimate. If you accept, we pay a deposit, often the same day. We inspect the CX-5 at a time and place that suits you, then pay the balance into your bank account. We collect the car, anywhere in Australia, only after you confirm the funds have cleared.

The valuation is free, there’s no obligation and no fees are taken out of the offer. We buy CX-5s 2021 or newer with 100,000 km or less. If yours is older or has more kilometres, send it through anyway and we’ll tell you straight away if we can help.

Each step is set out on how it works. For more on engines, grades and the warranty, read our guide to selling a used CX-5, and if you have another SUV to sell, see selling an SUV. Start with a free valuation or call 1800 73 55 73.

Your money clears before your keys leave your hand

Private sales go wrong at the handover: fake bank transfers, cheques that bounce, cars driven off before the money lands. We turned the order around so that never happens to you.

“I was paid before Autohaus took possession of my car, which from my experience normally doesn’t happen.”

Questions about selling your CX-5

Straight answers. If yours is not here, call us and ask.

1800 73 55 73
Do you buy CX-5s with the turbo or diesel engine?

Yes. We buy CX-5s with any of the four engines: the 2.0 and 2.5 petrol, the 2.5 turbo and the 2.2 diesel. Tell us which one yours has when you call, because it's one of the first things any buyer asks. The new-generation CX-5 is 2.5 petrol only, but no published data yet shows that a turbo or diesel now sells for more.

Do you buy front-wheel-drive CX-5s?

Yes. From the 2022 update, the Maxx was front-wheel drive only and the Maxx Sport came with either, so plenty of CX-5s are front-wheel drive. Tell us which yours is on the call. If you're unsure, the purchase contract usually says, or a Mazda dealer can check the VIN.

How do I know if my CX-5 is the 2022 update?

The updated CX-5 arrived in early January 2022, so most cars first sold after that are the update. The grade name often settles it: the GT was only sold before the update, and the Touring Active only after it. If you're still unsure, a Mazda dealer can confirm it from your VIN.

Should I sell my CX-5 now the new model is here?

No published data yet shows how the new CX-5 has moved used prices, so be wary of confident predictions either way. Your own timing usually matters more: the kilometres, a major service coming up, the end of the warranty or a decision about your loan. A free valuation gives you a real figure to weigh, with no obligation to sell.

Should I get my CX-5 serviced before I sell it?

If a logbook service is due soon, weigh its cost against leaving a gap in the history. A complete logbook helps with any buyer, but a big service bill isn't always recovered in the price. Mention it when you call, so the offer is made with the full picture.

What cars are you buying right now?

We are buying cars, utes, SUVs and 4WDs built in 2021 or later with 100,000 km or less. Any make is welcome, and we have strong demand for European and prestige models, dual-cab utes and family SUVs. If your car sits just outside that, send it through anyway and we will tell you straight away whether we can help.

When do I get paid?

Once we agree on a price, we can often pay a deposit the same day. After an inspection, the balance is paid into your bank account by bank transfer. The car is collected only after you confirm the funds have cleared, so you are never left without the car and without the money.

Can I sell my car if I still owe money on it?

Yes. We deal with your lender directly to pay out the loan, then pay you any equity left over. Cars under finance usually take 2 to 3 business days to settle. If you owe more than the car is worth, the difference has to be covered before settlement, and we show you the numbers before you decide.
