Skip the Hunter private-sale run-around
Listing a car privately in Newcastle or Maitland brings the usual run of scam messages, lowball offers and strangers wanting a test drive. You still have to be sure a payment is genuine before you hand over the keys. A trade-in is quicker, but you are negotiating with the dealer who is selling you the next car.
We are a licensed motor dealer based in Waterloo, in Sydney, and the business is run by a valuer who has priced cars since 1992. Newcastle is around 160 km up the M1 from Sydney, and you never have to make that drive. We make a genuine offer over the phone and, once you accept, pay a deposit, often the same day. The inspection happens at a time and place that suits you, the balance is paid into your bank account, and the car is collected only after you confirm the funds have cleared.
Utes and 4WDs from the Hunter
Plenty of Hunter vehicles work for a living: mine utes around Singleton and Muswellbrook, tradie utes in Newcastle and Lake Macquarie, and tow vehicles bound for Port Stephens. We buy late-model utes and 4WDs of any make, including the Toyota HiLux, Ford Ranger, Isuzu D-MAX and Mazda BT-50, along with family SUVs and European models.
Tell us on the call what is fitted, whether that is a canopy, tray, towbar, bull bar or a mine-site fit-out, and anything that has been taken off. It helps us make an offer on the vehicle you actually have.
High kilometres? Send it anyway
Hunter commutes add up. Drive from Lake Macquarie to a mine in the Upper Hunter, or from Cessnock down the Hunter Expressway to Newcastle, every working day, and a late-model ute can pass 100,000 km sooner than you might expect.
We are buying cars, utes, SUVs and 4WDs from 2021 or newer with 100,000 km or less. If yours has gone past that, send it through anyway and we will tell you straight away if we can help. Our guide to selling a car older than 2021 or over 100,000 km covers your other options.
NSW paperwork in plain terms
Your main job as the seller is a free notice of disposal with Service NSW, lodged straight after the sale and within 14 days at the latest. Selling to us, you enter our dealer licence number, MD 077404, where a private buyer’s licence would go. We prepare the rest of the sale paperwork and make sure the notice is done correctly. Drive to Sydney often? NorthConnex and Sydney’s motorways are tolled, so take the e-tag out of the car and remove the plate from your toll account before collection. Our guide to selling a car in NSW has the full detail.
Collection from the coast to the Upper Hunter
The inspection happens where the car is: a driveway in Merewether, a work car park in Mayfield, a depot in Singleton or a property outside Dungog. Once you confirm the money has cleared, we arrange collection, from Nelson Bay and Raymond Terrace to Kurri Kurri, Cessnock and Scone.
Leaving Williamtown on an interstate posting? Read whether to sell the car or take it with you. Further west or north? We buy right across regional NSW too.
Company and ABN utes
A ute registered to your company or ABN can be sold to us the same way. The registered owner is the seller, so the right person needs to sign, and GST may apply if the business is registered for GST and used the ute. Read how selling a company car works before you call.
What we are buying right now
Cars, utes, SUVs and 4WDs of any make, 2021 or newer, with 100,000 km or less. Finance owing is fine. Older or higher-km car? Send it through anyway and we will tell you straight away if we can help.

Selling a car in New South Wales
The practical side, so nothing catches you out. Rules change from time to time, so we confirm what applies to your car on the call.
- Registration authority
- Transport for NSW, with transactions through Service NSW
- Transfer of ownership
- In NSW, the seller lodges a free notice of disposal with Service NSW within 14 days of the sale, and Service NSW says to do it immediately after you sell. When you sell to us, you list our motor dealer licence (MD 077404) and registered business name in place of a buyer's licence. We prepare the sale paperwork and make sure your notice of disposal is done correctly, so the car comes off your name properly.
- Roadworthy certificate
- Usually not needed. A pink slip (safety check) is not needed to transfer a current NSW registration. Pink slips come up when you renew the rego on most light vehicles more than five years old, so most cars from 2021 or later will not have needed one yet. We confirm what applies to your car on the call.
- Good to know
- In NSW the buyer pays the transfer fee and any stamp duty, so there is nothing extra for you to pay when you sell to us. Your CTP green slip moves to the new owner automatically with the registration. On the day the car goes, take out your e-tag and delete the plate from your toll account.
What to have ready
- Photo ID
- Registration papers
- Service logbook and receipts for any recent work
- Loan details, if the car is under finance
- Bank account details for your payment
We prepare the sale paperwork and help with the transfer of ownership, so you do not have to chase forms.

What sellers say
Real sellers, quoted in their own words.
I had tried to sell it privately for some weeks but was only contacted by scammers and ridiculous offers. Dean offered me a fair price.
“I was paid before Autohaus took possession of my car, which from my experience normally doesn’t happen.”
Spiros Mercedes-Benz SLK 250 “They helped me through the transaction of a high value car and made it very pleasant. From paperwork and working with the lenders, to a personal touch.”
Roy Mercedes-Benz GLE 450
Sell Your Car Australia is run by Autohaus Australia Pty Ltd, so some reviews mention Autohaus Australia.
Selling your car in Newcastle: your questions
Straight answers. If yours is not here, call us and ask.
1800 73 55 73Do you buy cars across Newcastle and the Hunter?
Yes. We buy across Newcastle and Lake Macquarie, Maitland, Cessnock and Port Stephens, and up the valley to Singleton, Muswellbrook and Scone. The inspection happens at a time and place that suits you, and we arrange collection from your home or work once your funds have cleared. Further out than that? Send the car through anyway, because we arrange collection anywhere in Australia.
Your office is in Sydney. Do I have to bring the car down the M1?
No. We can price most cars from the make, model, year, kilometres and a few photos, and the offer is made over the phone. After you accept, the inspection happens in the Hunter at a time and place that suits you. The balance is paid into your bank account, and we collect the car only after you confirm the funds have cleared.
What do I put on the notice of disposal when I sell to you?
Service NSW lets you name a NSW motor dealer as the buyer by entering its licence number and registered business name. Ours are MD 077404 and Autohaus Australia Pty Ltd. You also need the sale date and the higher of the sale price or market value, and you can lodge online through a MyServiceNSW Account with your NSW licence or Photo Card. We make sure your notice is done correctly.
Can I sell a ute that is registered to my business?
Yes. Tell us on the call who the registered owner is, whether that is you or your company, so the right person signs the sale paperwork. If the business is registered for GST and the ute was used in it, the ATO says GST generally applies to the sale, so check with your accountant before you agree on a price.
What cars are you buying right now?
We are buying cars, utes, SUVs and 4WDs built in 2021 or later with 100,000 km or less. Any make is welcome, and we have strong demand for European and prestige models, dual-cab utes and family SUVs. If your car sits just outside that, send it through anyway and we will tell you straight away whether we can help.
When do I get paid?
Once we agree on a price, we can often pay a deposit the same day. After an inspection, the balance is paid into your bank account by bank transfer. The car is collected only after you confirm the funds have cleared, so you are never left without the car and without the money.
Can I sell my car if I still owe money on it?
Yes. We deal with your lender directly to pay out the loan, then pay you any equity left over. Cars under finance usually take 2 to 3 business days to settle. If you owe more than the car is worth, the difference has to be covered before settlement, and we show you the numbers before you decide.
