Selling from the Top End
A private sale in Darwin means a listing, a phone full of messages and test drives squeezed around work and the weather. Interstate buyers add another layer of risk. Scamwatch has warned that car-ad scammers often pose as defence personnel who are about to deploy, then push payment through fake escrow services. With Robertson Barracks and RAAF Base Darwin close by, a buyer with a posting story does not always ring alarm bells. Read how fake escrow scams work before you list.
With us, a valuer who has priced cars since 1992 makes a genuine offer over the phone. Once you accept, we pay a deposit, often the same day. The inspection is booked at a time and place that suits you, whether that is a driveway in Nightcliff, a unit car park in Palmerston or a block out at Humpty Doo.
The NT paperwork in brief
The NT does things differently from most states. There is no online form for a notice of disposal. You and the buyer both sign it, and you send it to the Motor Vehicle Registry within 14 days, by email, by mail or in person. Email is the quickest and leaves you a dated record.
MVR also asks for more detail than most states, including the VIN and the engine number. Few owners know the engine number, so find it in your paperwork, or ask your mechanic where it is stamped, before sale day. When you sell to us, we prepare the sale paperwork, help with the transfer of ownership and make sure your notice of disposal is done correctly.
The roadworthy rule in the NT is based on age: a light vehicle 7 years or older needs an inspection when ownership is transferred. A 2021 or newer car is not caught by the age rule in 2026. Our guide to selling a car in the NT walks through every step, and selling a car in Australia compares the rules in each state.
Long-distance collection, arranged by us
By the Stuart Highway, Darwin is about 320 km from Katherine and about 1,500 km from Alice Springs, and the southern capitals are further again. You do not have to drive the car anywhere or book a carrier. We are a licensed motor dealer based in Waterloo, Sydney, and we arrange collection anywhere in Australia, the Top End included. Tell us where the car is and we will confirm on the call how the inspection and collection will work. No fees are taken out of the offer.
The car is collected only after you confirm the balance has cleared in your bank account. Until then it stays with you, so keep your insurance active until it has been collected. If you cannot be home on the day, key drop-off can be arranged.
Posted out of Darwin or moving south? Selling before you go saves the long drive or the cost of shipping the car. Our guide to moving interstate weighs up both options.
Utes, 4WDs and family cars
From the dual-cab that does the run to Katherine to the family SUV on the Palmerston school run, we buy late-model cars, utes, SUVs and 4WDs of any make. That includes the HiLux, Ranger, D-MAX, BT-50, Prado and LandCruiser. Mention any canopy, bull bar or other accessories on the call. See what we look for in utes and 4WDs.
Long trips add kilometres quickly, and a return run to Alice Springs is close to 3,000 km. If your car is older than 2021 or past 100,000 km, send it through anyway and we will tell you straight away if we can help.
Still paying it off? We deal with your lender directly to pay out the loan, then pay you any equity. That usually takes 2 to 3 business days to settle, and any negative equity has to be covered before settlement. Read more about selling a car under finance.
What we are buying right now
Cars, utes, SUVs and 4WDs of any make, 2021 or newer, with 100,000 km or less. Finance owing is fine. Older or higher-km car? Send it through anyway and we will tell you straight away if we can help.

Selling a car in Northern Territory
The practical side, so nothing catches you out. Rules change from time to time, so we confirm what applies to your car on the call.
- Registration authority
- Motor Vehicle Registry (MVR), NT Government
- Transfer of ownership
- In the NT there's no online form. You and the buyer sign a notice of disposal, which must include the engine number as well as the VIN, rego number, sale date and the sale price or market value, and you send it to MVR within 14 days by email, mail or in person. The buyer then has 14 days to apply for the transfer. When you sell to us, we prepare the sale paperwork, help with the transfer of ownership and make sure your notice of disposal is done correctly.
- Roadworthy certificate
- Usually not for the cars we buy. In the NT, a light vehicle 7 years old or older needs a roadworthy inspection when ownership is transferred, and so does a vehicle that has been unregistered for 12 months or more. A 2021 or newer car is under that age in 2026, so a roadworthy or safety certificate usually is not needed when you sell to us. We confirm what applies to your car on the call.
- Good to know
- The buyer pays the transfer fee and stamp duty, so you pay neither when you sell to us. NT number plates belong to MVR, and what you hold is the right to display them: it can go with the car, move to another vehicle you own, or be swapped. Mention any personalised plates on the call.
What to have ready
- Photo ID
- Registration papers
- Service logbook and receipts for any recent work
- Loan details, if the car is under finance
- Bank account details for your payment
We prepare the sale paperwork and help with the transfer of ownership, so you do not have to chase forms.

What sellers say
Real sellers, quoted in their own words.
I was paid before Autohaus took possession of my car, which from my experience normally doesn’t happen.
“Within 10 minutes of my enquiry I was contacted by Dean. It all happened in less than an hour from the initial enquiry. I had a deposit in my bank account that night.”
Corey K Toyota LandCruiser 200 Series VX, Melbourne VIC “I had tried to sell it privately for some weeks but was only contacted by scammers and ridiculous offers. Dean offered me a fair price.”

Selling your car in Darwin: your questions
Straight answers. If yours is not here, call us and ask.
1800 73 55 73Do you buy cars in Darwin, Palmerston and the rest of the NT?
Yes. We buy across Darwin and its northern suburbs, Palmerston, and the rural area around Howard Springs, Humpty Doo and Berry Springs, as well as in Katherine, Tennant Creek and Alice Springs. If your car is somewhere more remote, send it through anyway and we will confirm on the call how the inspection and collection will work where it is.
Your office is in Sydney. How does selling from the Top End work?
You never have to drive or send the car anywhere. We can price most cars from the make, model, year, kilometres and a few photos, the inspection happens at a time and place that suits you, and we arrange the transport. The car is collected from your home or workplace only after you confirm the funds have cleared, and key drop-off can be arranged if you cannot be there.
How do I lodge a notice of disposal in the NT?
There is no online form. The notice can be MVR's R06 form, your latest rego certificate, a clearly written document or an email, and it must be signed by you and the buyer. Send it to MVR within 14 days by email to mvr@nt.gov.au, by mail to GPO Box 530, Darwin NT 0801, or in person, and keep a copy. When you sell to us, we make sure your notice of disposal is done correctly.
Do I need a roadworthy to sell my car in the NT?
Usually not for a car we buy. NT Government requires a roadworthy inspection when ownership of a light vehicle 7 years old or older is transferred, and when a vehicle has been unregistered for 12 months or more. A 2021 or newer car is under that age in 2026, so a roadworthy or safety certificate usually is not needed when you sell to us. If the car has been off the road, tell us and we will confirm what applies on the call.
What cars are you buying right now?
We are buying cars, utes, SUVs and 4WDs built in 2021 or later with 100,000 km or less. Any make is welcome, and we have strong demand for European and prestige models, dual-cab utes and family SUVs. If your car sits just outside that, send it through anyway and we will tell you straight away whether we can help.
When do I get paid?
Once we agree on a price, we can often pay a deposit the same day. After an inspection, the balance is paid into your bank account by bank transfer. The car is collected only after you confirm the funds have cleared, so you are never left without the car and without the money.
Can I sell my car if I still owe money on it?
Yes. We deal with your lender directly to pay out the loan, then pay you any equity left over. Cars under finance usually take 2 to 3 business days to settle. If you owe more than the car is worth, the difference has to be covered before settlement, and we show you the numbers before you decide.
