Sell your car in Launceston

Step 1 of 3: your car

We buy cars all over Launceston

We buy cars, utes, SUVs and 4WDs right across Launceston. That includes Newstead, Kings Meadows, South Launceston, Trevallyn and Invermay. It includes Youngtown, Prospect Vale and Summerhill to the south and west, and Mowbray, Newnham, Ravenswood and Rocherlea to the north. Up the Tamar it covers Legana, Exeter, Beaconsfield and George Town. In the Northern Midlands it covers Hadspen, Longford, Perth and Evandale. Wherever the car is parked, we can buy your car.

We are licensed NSW motor dealer MD 077404 (Autohaus Australia Pty Ltd), buying cars Australia-wide, Tasmania included. The business is run by a valuer who has priced cars since 1992. You get a genuine offer by phone, not an online estimate. We also buy cars along the coast in Devonport and Burnie, and down the Midland Highway in Hobart.

The cars we buy in Launceston

Northern Tasmania is tough on a car. Winter mornings in the Tamar Valley bring fog and frost, and plenty of drives end on a gravel road. Farmers around Longford, Cressy and Evandale run dual cabs and tow trailers. Vineyard workers drive up and down the Tamar, and commuters come in from George Town and Bell Bay every weekday. Families in Legana, Prospect Vale and Kings Meadows need a mid-size SUV for school, sport and weekends away.

We buy them all, including utes like the Toyota HiLux, Ford Ranger and Mazda BT-50, and SUVs like the Toyota RAV4. We are buying cars 2021 or newer with 100,000 km or less. Older, or more kilometres? Send it through anyway and we will tell you straight away if we can help.

Selling a car in Launceston without the hassle

Launceston’s private market is small. A listing can sit while you screen scam messages, watch for fake payment receipts and arrange test drives with strangers. Trading in is quicker, but the figure is tied to the next car the dealer sells you. And if the car mostly sits in the garage, it may be time to sell a car you do not use.

When you sell your car to us, you accept the offer on the call, and a deposit is often paid the same day. The inspection happens at a time and place that suits you. The balance is paid into your bank account, and we collect the car only after you confirm the funds have cleared. Still paying it off? We deal with your lender directly and pay you any equity. See how it works.

Paperwork in Tasmania

In Tasmania, the seller must lodge a disposal with the Registrar of Motor Vehicles within 7 days of the sale. That can be online through the disposal portal, on the MR116 form at Service Tasmania, by post or by email. Nothing confirms it automatically, so check with Service Tasmania about a week later that the car is out of your name. When you sell to us, we prepare the sale paperwork and make sure your disposal is done correctly.

A roadworthy is usually not needed, because Transport Tasmania lists no inspection for transferring a currently registered car. Read our guide to selling a car in Tasmania or the guide to selling a car in Australia. Then call 1800 73 55 73 and sell your car to us.

What we are buying right now

Cars, utes, SUVs and 4WDs of any make, 2021 or newer, with 100,000 km or less. Finance owing is fine. Older or higher-km car? Send it through anyway and we will tell you straight away if we can help.

Selling a car in Tasmania

The practical side, so nothing catches you out. Rules change from time to time, so we confirm what applies to your car on the call.

Registration authority
Transport Tasmania (the Registrar of Motor Vehicles), with transactions through Service Tasmania
Transfer of ownership
In Tasmania, the seller must lodge a disposal with the Registrar of Motor Vehicles within 7 days of the sale: online through the disposal portal, on the MR116 form at Service Tasmania, by post or by email. There is no automatic confirmation, so check with Service Tasmania about a week later that the car is out of your name. When you sell to us, we prepare the sale paperwork and make sure your disposal is done correctly.
Roadworthy certificate
Usually not needed. Transport Tasmania lists no inspection for transferring a currently registered car, and you usually do not need a roadworthy to sell to a licensed dealer. The exception is a car that has been unregistered for three months or more, which must be inspected before it can be registered to the new owner, so we confirm what applies to your car on the call.
Good to know
Motor vehicle duty and the transfer fee are the buyer's costs in Tasmania, so you pay neither when you sell to us. The buyer has 14 days to transfer the registration into their name, but that never extends your own 7 days to lodge the disposal.

What to have ready

  • Photo ID
  • Registration papers
  • Service logbook and receipts for any recent work
  • Loan details, if the car is under finance
  • Bank account details for your payment

We prepare the sale paperwork and help with the transfer of ownership, so you do not have to chase forms.

How selling your car in Launceston works

Four steps. Your part takes about a minute, and you are paid before the car leaves your driveway.

  1. Tell us about your car

Make, model, year and kilometres. A minute on the form, or a quick call.

  2. Get a genuine offer

We call you, check a few details and make a cash offer. Accept it or walk away.

  3. Get paid

A deposit once you accept. The balance lands in your account after an inspection.

  4. We collect the car

Only after your funds have cleared, from your home or work, anywhere in Australia.

Selling your car in Launceston: your questions

Straight answers. If yours is not here, call us and ask.

Do you buy cars in Kings Meadows, Legana and Prospect Vale?

Yes. We buy cars right across Launceston, including Kings Meadows, Newstead, Youngtown, Prospect Vale, Riverside and Mowbray, up the Tamar to Legana, Exeter and George Town, and out to Longford, Evandale and Deloraine. We are a licensed NSW motor dealer buying cars Australia-wide, so wherever the car is parked, we can buy your car.

How does collection work from Launceston?

You accept our offer on the call, and a deposit is often paid the same day. The inspection happens after that, at a time and place that suits you, whether that is home in Trevallyn or a farm gate near Longford. The balance is paid into your bank account, and we arrange collection only after you confirm the funds have cleared.

Do I need a roadworthy to sell my car in Tasmania?

Usually not. Transport Tasmania lists no inspection for transferring a currently registered car, and you usually do not need a roadworthy to sell to a licensed dealer. The exception is a car that has been unregistered for three months or more, which must be inspected before it can be registered to the new owner. We confirm what applies to your car on the call.

Do you buy farm utes from the Northern Midlands?

Yes. A dual cab that works the paddocks around Longford, Cressy or Evandale is exactly the kind of car we buy, as long as it is 2021 or newer with 100,000 km or less. Mention the tow bar, canopy or bull bar on the call. Older or higher kilometres? Send it through anyway and we will tell you straight away if we can help.

What cars are you buying right now?

We are buying cars, utes, SUVs and 4WDs built in 2021 or later with 100,000 km or less. Any make is welcome, and we have strong demand for European and prestige models, dual-cab utes and family SUVs. If your car sits just outside that, send it through anyway and we will tell you straight away whether we can help.

When do I get paid?

Once we agree on a price, we can often pay a deposit the same day. After an inspection, the balance is paid into your bank account by bank transfer. The car is collected only after you confirm the funds have cleared, so you are never left without the car and without the money.

Can I sell my car if I still owe money on it?

Yes. We deal with your lender directly to pay out the loan, then pay you any equity left over. Cars under finance usually take 2 to 3 business days to settle. If you owe more than the car is worth, the difference has to be covered before settlement, and we show you the numbers before you decide.
