Selling a car in Western Australia

- Transfer of ownership
- In WA, the seller must notify the Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure within 7 days of the sale, and the buyer has 14 days to complete the transfer. It can be done online through DoTDirect or with the MR9 Notification of Change of Ownership form. When you sell to us, we prepare the sale paperwork and help you lodge the notification, so the car comes off your name properly.
- Roadworthy certificate
- Usually not. WA has no roadworthy certificate for selling a car, and a car with a current vehicle licence can be transferred without an inspection. Selling to a licensed dealer usually needs nothing extra, and we confirm what applies to your car on the call.
- Good to know
- Registration is called the vehicle licence in WA. The transfer fee and vehicle licence duty are the buyer's costs, so you pay neither when you sell to us, and any time left on the licence, including the motor injury insurance that comes with it, stays with the car.

Your office is in Sydney. How does selling from WA work?
You never have to send the car anywhere yourself. We price it from its details and a few photos, the inspection happens in WA at a time and place that suits you, and our transport partner collects the car from your home or workplace only after your funds have cleared. If you are away on site or cannot be home on the day, key drop-off can be arranged.
How does the Department of Transport transfer work?
The Department of Transport is now the Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure (DTMI). As the seller, you must tell DTMI within 7 days that you have sold the car, either online through DoTDirect or with the MR9 Notification of Change of Ownership form. We prepare the sale paperwork and help you lodge it, so the car is legally transferred out of your name.
Do I need a roadworthy to sell my car in WA?
Usually not. WA has no roadworthy certificate for selling a car, and selling a currently licensed car to a licensed dealer usually needs nothing extra. We confirm what applies to your car on the call. Do keep the vehicle licence current until the sale: once it has been expired for more than 15 days, the car is unlicensed and generally has to be inspected and licensed again rather than simply transferred.
Can I keep my personalised plates?
Yes, if you sort it out before the sale. In WA, personalised plates you want to keep must be exchanged for standard plates at a DTMI service centre before the car is sold, so they stay with you for your next car. Mention them on the call and we will plan the sale around the swap.
What cars are you buying right now?

Once we agree on a price, we can often pay a deposit the same day. After an inspection, the balance is paid into your bank account by bank transfer. The car is collected only after you confirm the funds have cleared, so you are never left without the car and without the money.
Can I sell my car if I still owe money on it?
Yes. We deal with your lender directly to pay out the loan, then pay you any equity left over. Cars under finance usually take 2 to 3 business days to settle. If you owe more than the car is worth, the difference has to be covered before settlement, and we show you the numbers before you decide.
