Sell your car in Canberra. No drive to Sydney, paid before pickup.
A genuine offer over the phone from a licensed dealer, the sale paperwork prepared for you, and collection from anywhere in Canberra or the towns around it once your money has cleared.
Sell your car in Canberra
Step 1 of 3: your car
- Licensed dealer MD 077404NSW licence. Run by a valuer since 1992
- Paid before pickupFunds clear before the car leaves
- An offer on the callA real offer, not an online estimate
- Australia-wideWe arrange collection in every state
No drive up the Federal Highway
A private sale in Canberra means a listing, scam messages and weekend test drives, then checking that a payment has really landed before you hand over the keys. A trade-in is quicker, but you are negotiating with the dealer who is selling you the next car.
Our office is in Waterloo, Sydney, around three hours away by road, but you never make that trip. A valuer who has priced cars since 1992 makes a genuine offer over the phone, and once you accept, a deposit is often paid the same day. The inspection comes next, at a time and place that suits you: a driveway in Gungahlin, a work car park in Barton or a garage in Tuggeranong. The balance goes into your bank account, and we arrange collection only after you confirm the funds have cleared.
ACT paperwork in brief
Selling an ACT-registered car comes down to three jobs:
- Sign the back of the rego certificate with the buyer. It holds the transfer application and the notice of disposal, and the buyer keeps the transfer section. On a private sale, sign once the money is in your account. No certificate to hand? Access Canberra has a separate notice of disposal form.
- Leave the plates on. Access Canberra says plates must stay on a car sold with current ACT registration. They only come off if you cancel the rego and sell the car unregistered.
- Notify Access Canberra as soon as you sell. Its selling page does not give sellers a deadline, but waiting only leaves the car in your name for longer.
The buyer then has 14 days to transfer the rego. A private buyer of a car more than 6 years old, or imported, needs a roadworthy inspection first, at Access Canberra’s inspection station in Hume or an authorised inspection station. Most 2021 or newer cars are under that age. Our guide to selling a car in the ACT has the detail, including rego refunds and duty.
Selling to a NSW-licensed dealer from the ACT
We hold a NSW motor dealer licence, MD 077404. Access Canberra gives sellers the same obligations when the buyer is interstate, with one practical difference. The online notice of disposal only works when you and the buyer both hold ACT licences, so when you sell to us you lodge it through your ACT Digital Account, by post or at an Access Canberra Service Centre. We prepare the sale paperwork, help with the transfer of ownership and make sure your notice of disposal is done correctly.
Canberra and the towns over the border
We buy right across Canberra and in the NSW towns around it, from Queanbeyan, Jerrabomberra and Googong to Bungendore, Murrumbateman and Yass. Further out, around Cooma, the Snowy Mountains or the South Coast? Tell us where the car is and we will confirm on the call how the inspection and collection will work.
Live over the border? Check your rego papers. A NSW-registered car follows NSW rules, even if you drive it into Civic every day. You lodge a free notice of disposal with Service NSW, ideally the same day you sell, and list our dealer licence in place of a buyer’s licence. Our guide to selling a car in NSW explains the rest, and selling a car in Australia covers every state and territory.

Selling a car in Australian Capital Territory
The practical side, so nothing catches you out. Rules change from time to time, so we confirm what applies to your car on the call.
- Registration authority
- Access Canberra, with motor vehicle duty set by the ACT Revenue Office
- Transfer of ownership
- In the ACT, you and the buyer sign the transfer and notice of disposal sections on the back of your rego certificate, and the buyer keeps the transfer section. You then notify Access Canberra as soon as you sell: online if you both hold ACT licences, otherwise through your ACT Digital Account, by post or at a service centre. The buyer has 14 days to transfer the rego. When you sell to us, we prepare the sale paperwork, help with the transfer of ownership and make sure your notice of disposal is done correctly.
- Roadworthy certificate
- Usually not needed when you sell to us. In the ACT the roadworthy inspection is the buyer's step: Access Canberra requires one before a car that weighs up to 4.5 tonnes and is more than 6 years old, or is imported, can be transferred. Most 2021 or newer cars are under that age. Rules differ by state, so we confirm what applies to your car on the call.
- Good to know
- Number plates must stay on a car sold with current ACT registration, so leave them on for collection. Motor vehicle duty is the buyer's cost, based on the higher of the price or market value and on the car's CO2 emissions, so you pay none of it when you sell to us.
What to have ready
- Photo ID
- Registration papers
- Service logbook and receipts for any recent work
- Loan details, if the car is under finance
- Bank account details for your payment
We prepare the sale paperwork and help with the transfer of ownership, so you do not have to chase forms.

Corey K Toyota LandCruiser 200 Series VX, Melbourne VIC “I put my faith in the transaction going through while away on holidays and to his word Dean was honest, transparent and came through without any issues.”

Selling your car in Canberra: your questions
Straight answers. If yours is not here, call us and ask.
1800 73 55 73Do you buy cars across Canberra and the nearby NSW towns?
Yes. We buy across Canberra, from Gungahlin and Belconnen through the inner north and south to Woden, Weston Creek, Molonglo Valley and Tuggeranong, and in NSW towns such as Queanbeyan, Jerrabomberra, Googong, Bungendore, Murrumbateman and Yass. The inspection happens at a time and place that suits you, and we arrange collection once your funds have cleared. If your car is further out, send it through anyway and we will confirm on the call how it will work.
How do I notify Access Canberra when I sell to you?
The online notice of disposal is only for sales where you and the buyer both hold ACT licences. We are a NSW-licensed dealer, so you submit the notice through your ACT Digital Account, post it to PO Box 582, Dickson ACT 2602, or hand it in at an Access Canberra Service Centre. Access Canberra does not set a number of days for sellers, so do it as soon as you sell. We prepare the sale paperwork and make sure your notice of disposal is done correctly.
Do I take the ACT plates off before the car is collected?
No, not if the car has current ACT rego. Access Canberra says number plates must be left on a car sold with current ACT registration, and the same applies when the buyer is interstate. The plates only come off if you cancel the rego and sell the car unregistered, and then they are surrendered. If you have personalised plates you want to keep, ask Access Canberra how before the sale and mention them on the call.
Do I need a roadworthy inspection to sell my car in Canberra?
Usually not when you sell to us. In the ACT the inspection is part of the buyer's transfer, and a private buyer needs one if the car weighs up to 4.5 tonnes and is more than 6 years old, or is imported. Most 2021 or newer cars are under that age. We confirm what applies to your car on the call.
What cars are you buying right now?
We are buying cars, utes, SUVs and 4WDs built in 2021 or later with 100,000 km or less. Any make is welcome, and we have strong demand for European and prestige models, dual-cab utes and family SUVs. If your car sits just outside that, send it through anyway and we will tell you straight away whether we can help.
When do I get paid?
Once we agree on a price, we can often pay a deposit the same day. After an inspection, the balance is paid into your bank account by bank transfer. The car is collected only after you confirm the funds have cleared, so you are never left without the car and without the money.
Can I sell my car if I still owe money on it?
Yes. We deal with your lender directly to pay out the loan, then pay you any equity left over. Cars under finance usually take 2 to 3 business days to settle. If you owe more than the car is worth, the difference has to be covered before settlement, and we show you the numbers before you decide.
Other places we buy cars
Same process, same offer, wherever you are, the ACT and NT included. We arrange collection from your home or work.
We can buy your car in Canberra
