We buy cars all over Hobart

We buy cars, utes, SUVs and 4WDs right across Hobart. That covers Sandy Bay, Battery Point, North Hobart, West Hobart and New Town. It covers the northern suburbs from Moonah and Glenorchy through Claremont to Bridgewater and Brighton. On the Eastern Shore it runs from Lindisfarne and Bellerive to Howrah, Rokeby and Lauderdale. Further out, it covers Kingston, the Huon Valley, New Norfolk and Sorell. Wherever the car is parked, we can buy your car.

We are licensed NSW motor dealer MD 077404 (Autohaus Australia Pty Ltd), and we buy cars right across Australia, Tasmania included. The business is run by a valuer who has priced cars since 1992, and the offer is made by phone. We also buy cars up north in Launceston, on the North West Coast in Devonport, and anywhere else in Tasmania.

The cars we buy in Hobart

Hobart is a hilly city with proper winters. Steep streets in West Hobart and Sandy Bay, frosty mornings and weekend drives up kunanyi/Mount Wellington or down to the Huon all suit a capable all-wheel-drive. Commuters cross the Tasman Bridge or come down the Brooker Highway every weekday. Tradies run utes across Glenorchy and the Eastern Shore, and farms in the Huon and Derwent valleys keep a dual cab working.

We buy late-model SUVs, utes and prestige cars of every make. That includes the Toyota RAV4, Mazda CX-5, Toyota HiLux and Mercedes-Benz GLC. We are buying cars 2021 or newer with 100,000 km or less. Older, or more kilometres? Send it through anyway and we will tell you straight away if we can help.

Selling a car in Hobart without the hassle

Hobart’s private market is smaller than the mainland capitals, so the right buyer can take a while. Meanwhile there are scam messages to screen, fake payment receipts to watch for and test drives to fit around work and the weather. A trade-in is quicker, but the figure is tied to the next car the dealer sells you.

When you sell your car to us, you accept the offer on the call, and a deposit is often paid the same day. The inspection follows, at a time and place that suits you. The balance is paid into your bank account, and we arrange collection only after you confirm the funds have cleared. Car still under finance? We deal with your lender directly and pay you any equity, so selling a car under finance is straightforward.

Paperwork in Tasmania

In Tasmania, the seller must lodge a disposal with the Registrar of Motor Vehicles within 7 days of the sale. You can do it online through the disposal portal, on the MR116 form at Service Tasmania, by post or by email. There is no automatic confirmation, so check with Service Tasmania about a week later that the car is out of your name. When you sell to us, we prepare the sale paperwork and make sure your disposal is done correctly.

You usually do not need a roadworthy to sell a registered car to a licensed dealer. Read our guide to selling a car in Tasmania and the wider guide to selling a car in Australia. Then call 1800 73 55 73 and sell your car to us.

What we are buying right now

Cars, utes, SUVs and 4WDs of any make, 2021 or newer, with 100,000 km or less. Finance owing is fine. Older or higher-km car? Send it through anyway and we will tell you straight away if we can help.

Selling a car in Tasmania

The practical side, so nothing catches you out. Rules change from time to time, so we confirm what applies to your car on the call.

Registration authority
Transport Tasmania (the Registrar of Motor Vehicles), with transactions through Service Tasmania
Transfer of ownership
In Tasmania, the seller must lodge a disposal with the Registrar of Motor Vehicles within 7 days of the sale: online through the disposal portal, on the MR116 form at Service Tasmania, by post or by email. There is no automatic confirmation, so check with Service Tasmania about a week later that the car is out of your name. When you sell to us, we prepare the sale paperwork and make sure your disposal is done correctly.
Roadworthy certificate
Usually not needed. Transport Tasmania lists no inspection for transferring a currently registered car, and you usually do not need a roadworthy to sell to a licensed dealer. The exception is a car that has been unregistered for three months or more, which must be inspected before it can be registered to the new owner, so we confirm what applies to your car on the call.
Good to know
Motor vehicle duty and the transfer fee are the buyer's costs in Tasmania, so you pay neither when you sell to us. The buyer has 14 days to transfer the registration into their name, but that never extends your own 7 days to lodge the disposal.

What to have ready

  • Photo ID
  • Registration papers
  • Service logbook and receipts for any recent work
  • Loan details, if the car is under finance
  • Bank account details for your payment

We prepare the sale paperwork and help with the transfer of ownership, so you do not have to chase forms.

Selling your car in Hobart: your questions

Straight answers. If yours is not here, call us and ask.

1800 73 55 73
Do you buy cars in Sandy Bay, Glenorchy and Kingston?

Yes. We buy cars right across Hobart, including Sandy Bay, New Town, Moonah, Glenorchy and Claremont, the Eastern Shore from Lindisfarne to Rokeby, and south to Kingston and Blackmans Bay. We also buy in the Huon Valley, New Norfolk and Sorell. We are a licensed NSW motor dealer buying cars Australia-wide, so wherever the car is parked, we can buy your car.

How does collection work from Hobart?

You accept our offer on the call, and a deposit is often paid the same day. The inspection happens after that, at a time and place that suits you, whether that is home in Howrah or your work car park in town. The balance is paid into your bank account, and we arrange collection only after you confirm the funds have cleared. There is no ferry to book and nothing to drive anywhere.

How does the disposal work when I sell my car in Tasmania?

In Tasmania, the seller must lodge a disposal with the Registrar of Motor Vehicles within 7 days of the sale. You can do it online through the disposal portal, on the MR116 form at Service Tasmania, by post or by email. There is no automatic confirmation, so check with Service Tasmania about a week later that the car is out of your name. When you sell to us, we prepare the sale paperwork and make sure your disposal is done correctly.

I am moving to the mainland. Should I sell my car before I go?

If you do not want to take it with you, selling before you leave means there is nothing to ship across Bass Strait. Tell us your moving date on the call. The inspection happens at a time and place that suits you, and we collect the car only after you confirm the funds have cleared. Just remember your disposal is due within 7 days of the sale.

What cars are you buying right now?

We are buying cars, utes, SUVs and 4WDs built in 2021 or later with 100,000 km or less. Any make is welcome, and we have strong demand for European and prestige models, dual-cab utes and family SUVs. If your car sits just outside that, send it through anyway and we will tell you straight away whether we can help.

When do I get paid?

Once we agree on a price, we can often pay a deposit the same day. After an inspection, the balance is paid into your bank account by bank transfer. The car is collected only after you confirm the funds have cleared, so you are never left without the car and without the money.

Can I sell my car if I still owe money on it?

Yes. We deal with your lender directly to pay out the loan, then pay you any equity left over. Cars under finance usually take 2 to 3 business days to settle. If you owe more than the car is worth, the difference has to be covered before settlement, and we show you the numbers before you decide.
