We buy cars all over Cairns
Selling a car privately in Cairns takes time you may not have. You write the ad, sort through the scam messages and wait for strangers to turn up for a test drive between storms. Trading in is easier, but you are negotiating with the dealer who wants to sell you the next car.
There is a simpler way: sell your car to us. We are a licensed NSW motor dealer (MD 077404) and we buy cars Australia-wide, Far North Queensland included. We can buy your car whether it is parked in Edge Hill, Redlynch, Smithfield, Bentley Park or out at Gordonvale. We also buy cars in Kuranda, Mareeba and Atherton, and up the coast in Port Douglas and Mossman. Further south, we also buy cars in Townsville and Bowen.
The cars we buy in Cairns
Cairns runs on utes and 4WDs. Tradies, Tablelands farmers and anyone who heads for the Cape on a long weekend need something tough. We buy your Toyota HiLux, Ford Ranger or LandCruiser. We buy the family SUVs on the school run too, like the Toyota RAV4 and Mazda CX-5. See what we look for in utes and 4WDs and SUVs.
We are buying cars, utes, SUVs and 4WDs from 2021 or newer with 100,000 km or less. Older or higher kilometres? Send it through anyway and we will tell you straight away if we can help. The tropics are hard on cars, so mention any rust or wet-season damage on the call.
Selling a car in Cairns without the hassle
The offer comes over the phone from a valuer who has priced cars since 1992. It is a genuine offer, not an online estimate. Once you accept, we pay a deposit, often the same day. The inspection happens at a time and place that suits you. The balance goes into your bank account, and the car is collected only after you confirm the funds have cleared. How it works sets out every step.
Still paying the car off? We deal with your lender directly and pay you any equity. Read more about selling a car under finance. No fees come out of the offer, and the free valuation carries no obligation.
Paperwork in Queensland
In Queensland the seller starts the transfer. TMR says you must transfer the registration within 14 days of the sale, and the seller pays no fee. The buyer pays the transfer fee and vehicle registration duty. Until the transfer goes through, you remain liable for tolls and fines. When you sell your car to us, we prepare the sale paperwork and help with the transfer. Our guides to selling a car in Queensland and selling a car in Australia cover the rest.

Selling a car in Queensland
The practical side, so nothing catches you out. Rules change from time to time, so we confirm what applies to your car on the call.
- Registration authority
- Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR)
- Transfer of ownership
- In Queensland the seller starts the transfer. TMR says that after you sell, you must transfer the registration within 14 days, and the seller pays no fee. The buyer pays the transfer fee and vehicle registration duty. Until the transfer goes through, you remain liable for tolls and fines on a car still registered in your name. When you sell to us, we prepare the sale paperwork and help with the transfer, so your part is done correctly.
- Safety certificate
- Usually not. Queensland's version of a roadworthy is the safety certificate, and a private buyer of a registered car is owed a current one. TMR exempts cars traded to licensed motor dealers, so when you sell to a licensed dealer the private-sale rule usually does not apply. We confirm what applies to your car on the call.
- Good to know
- Vehicle registration duty, Queensland's stamp duty on cars, is the buyer's cost, not yours. Compulsory third party (CTP) insurance is bundled with your Queensland rego. If you pay the rego by direct debit, TMR says to remove it so no payment comes out after you have sold the car.
What to have ready
- Photo ID
- Registration papers
- Service logbook and receipts for any recent work
- Loan details, if the car is under finance
- Bank account details for your payment
We prepare the sale paperwork and help with the transfer of ownership, so you do not have to chase forms.

Within 10 minutes of my enquiry I was contacted by Dean. It all happened in less than an hour from the initial enquiry. I had a deposit in my bank account that night.

Selling your car in Cairns: your questions
Straight answers. If yours is not here, call us and ask.
1800 73 55 73Do you buy cars in Smithfield, Edmonton and Trinity Beach?
Yes. We buy cars right across Cairns, from Smithfield, Trinity Beach and Palm Cove on the northern beaches to Edmonton, Mount Sheridan and Gordonvale in the south. We also buy cars on the Tablelands and up the coast to Port Douglas and Mossman. The inspection happens at a time and place that suits you.
How does collection work from Cairns?
Once you accept our offer, we pay a deposit, often the same day, and the inspection happens at a time and place that suits you. The balance goes into your bank account. We arrange collection only after you confirm the funds have cleared, so the car never leaves before you are paid. There is nothing for you to drive south.
Do I need a safety certificate to sell my car in Cairns?
Usually not.
My car has lived near the beach. Will you still buy it?
Send it through. Cairns cars deal with salt air, humidity and the wet season, so tell us on the call about any rust, mould or water marks, and anything that has been repaired. An honest description helps us make an offer on the car you actually have, and we will tell you straight away if we can help.
What cars are you buying right now?
We are buying cars, utes, SUVs and 4WDs built in 2021 or later with 100,000 km or less. Any make is welcome, and we have strong demand for European and prestige models, dual-cab utes and family SUVs. If your car sits just outside that, send it through anyway and we will tell you straight away whether we can help.
When do I get paid?
Once we agree on a price, we can often pay a deposit the same day. After an inspection, the balance is paid into your bank account by bank transfer. The car is collected only after you confirm the funds have cleared, so you are never left without the car and without the money.
Can I sell my car if I still owe money on it?
Yes. We deal with your lender directly to pay out the loan, then pay you any equity left over. Cars under finance usually take 2 to 3 business days to settle. If you owe more than the car is worth, the difference has to be covered before settlement, and we show you the numbers before you decide.
