Selling from North Queensland

A private sale in Townsville means a smaller pool of local buyers, plus the listing, the scam messages and the test drives. A trade-in means negotiating with the dealer selling you the next car. Take the car south to a bigger market and you are looking at more than 1,000 km of Bruce Highway before you reach Brisbane.

You don’t have to take it anywhere. A valuer who has priced cars since 1992 makes a genuine offer over the phone, from the car’s details and a few photos, and a deposit is often paid the same day. The inspection happens after you accept, at a time and place that suits you: a driveway in Kirwan, a shed outside Ayr or the car park at work. We arrange the transport, and the car is collected only after you confirm the balance has cleared.

That order matters more up here than in a capital city. The Bruce Highway is prone to flooding in places during the wet, so a pickup date can move. Because you have been paid by then, a later pickup is an inconvenience, not a financial risk.

Flood and water damage: tell us up front

If your car has been in floodwater, say so on the call, before an offer is made. Queensland’s Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) lists flood among the events that can make a car a total write-off. Insurers must report a car they assess that way, and if nobody has, TMR says the owner must. Once a car is on the written-off vehicle register, its status doesn’t change even if it is repaired or sold, and a PPSR search shows written-off status where the data is available.

Not every wet car is written off. If your insurer repaired it, keep the claim number, the assessor’s report and the repair invoices together. The Queensland Government warns buyers that many consumer rights won’t apply in a private sale, but a false answer to a direct question is never safe. Dealers carry stricter duties: the ACCC says they must not mislead buyers about accident history or written-off status. Our guides to accident history and car value and selling a repairable write-off go further.

Utes, 4WDs and touring rigs

Dual-cab utes and 4WDs do the work in North Queensland, from the cane farms around Ayr, Home Hill and Ingham to the cattle country west of Charters Towers. We buy late-model utes, SUVs and 4WDs of any make, including the HiLux, Ranger, D-MAX, BT-50, Prado and LandCruiser. See what we look for in utes and 4WDs.

Back from a lap of Australia or a run up to Cape York? Read selling your tow vehicle after a big trip for the tow bar, brake controller and touring gear. If the car has backed down boat ramps, hose the salt off the underbody before the inspection.

Posted out of Lavarack Barracks or RAAF Base Townsville? Weigh up moving interstate: sell your car or take it before you book transport.

Queensland rules in brief

The seller starts the transfer within 14 days, at no cost. TMR’s online service doesn’t cover transfers to an organisation, so a sale to a dealer usually uses the paper form (F3520). TMR says you may be held accountable for offences committed by the buyer until the transfer is finalised, so keep your seller’s copy. A private buyer is owed a safety certificate, but TMR exempts cars traded to licensed motor dealers, and we’ll confirm how that applies to your car.

We prepare the sale paperwork and help with the transfer of ownership. Our guide to selling a car in Queensland has the detail. Still paying the car off? Read about selling a car under finance.

What we are buying right now

Cars, utes, SUVs and 4WDs of any make, 2021 or newer, with 100,000 km or less. Finance owing is fine. Older or higher-km car? Send it through anyway and we will tell you straight away if we can help.

Selling a car in Queensland

The practical side, so nothing catches you out. Rules change from time to time, so we confirm what applies to your car on the call.

Transfer of ownership
In Queensland, you start the transfer within 14 days of the sale, and it costs you nothing. TMR's online service can't be used when the buyer is an organisation, so a sale to a dealer usually runs on the paper transfer form (F3520), and TMR recommends keeping your seller's copy until the car is out of your name. When you sell to us, we prepare the sale paperwork and help with the transfer of ownership.
Safety certificate
Usually not when you sell to us. A private buyer is owed a safety certificate, Queensland's version of a roadworthy, but TMR exempts cars traded to licensed motor dealers. We'll confirm how that applies to your car on the call.
Good to know
The transfer fee and vehicle registration duty are the buyer's costs, so you pay neither when you sell to us. CTP is bundled with your Queensland rego. Before the sale, TMR's advice is to take the rego off direct debit, remove any toll tag and update your Linkt account.

Selling your car in Townsville: your questions

Straight answers. If yours is not here, call us and ask.

Do you buy cars anywhere in North Queensland?

Yes. We buy right across Townsville, from Bushland Beach and Deeragun to Kirwan, Annandale and the city, and across the region, including Ayr and Home Hill, Charters Towers, Ingham, Bowen and Cairns. The inspection happens at a time and place that suits you, and once your funds have cleared, our transport partner collects the car from your home or workplace. Key drop-off can be arranged if you can't be there.

My car has been in floodwater. Can I still sell it to you?

Tell us on the call, before an offer is made, and we will tell you straight away whether we can help. What matters most is whether the car was written off. TMR lists flood among the events that can make a car a total write-off, and once a car is on the written-off vehicle register, its status doesn't change even if it is repaired or sold. If your insurer repaired the car instead, have the claim number and the repair invoices ready.

Do I need a safety certificate to sell my car in Townsville?

A private buyer of a registered car is owed a safety certificate, but TMR exempts cars traded to licensed motor dealers. The exemption is written for licensed motor dealers and we hold a NSW licence, so we confirm how it applies to your car on the call. When you sell to us, a safety certificate is usually not needed, so you don't pay for an inspection you may not need.

I'm being posted away from Townsville. Should I sell before I go?

It's worth comparing the two. Taking the car means a long drive or paying for transport, and you will usually need to register it in your new state. Selling before you go is one less thing to organise, and the collection can be timed around your move, with key drop-off if you can't be there. Our guide to moving interstate goes through both options.

What cars are you buying right now?

We are buying cars, utes, SUVs and 4WDs built in 2021 or later with 100,000 km or less. Any make is welcome, and we have strong demand for European and prestige models, dual-cab utes and family SUVs. If your car sits just outside that, send it through anyway and we will tell you straight away whether we can help.

When do I get paid?

Once we agree on a price, we can often pay a deposit the same day. After an inspection, the balance is paid into your bank account by bank transfer. The car is collected only after you confirm the funds have cleared, so you are never left without the car and without the money.

Can I sell my car if I still owe money on it?

Yes. We deal with your lender directly to pay out the loan, then pay you any equity left over. Cars under finance usually take 2 to 3 business days to settle. If you owe more than the car is worth, the difference has to be covered before settlement, and we show you the numbers before you decide.
