What sellers say

Corey sold us his Toyota LandCruiser 200 Series from Melbourne and had a deposit in his account that night. Roy's sale involved paperwork and his lenders. Here are their stories and one more, in their own words.

Within 10 minutes of my enquiry I was contacted by Dean. It all happened in less than an hour from the initial enquiry. I had a deposit in my bank account that night.

Corey K Toyota LandCruiser 200 Series VX, Melbourne VIC
  • “They helped me through the transaction of a high value car and made it very pleasant. From paperwork and working with the lenders, to a personal touch.”

    Roy Mercedes-Benz GLE 450
  • “No haggling, or dealerships trying to get a lower price. In less than 3 business days I had an inspection completed, my car sold, with funds cleared in my bank account.”

How selling your HiLux works

Four steps. Your part takes about a minute, and you are paid before the car leaves your driveway.

  1. Tell us about your car

Make, model, year and kilometres. A minute on the form, or a quick call.

  2. Get a genuine offer

We call you, check a few details and make a cash offer. Accept it or walk away.

  3. Get paid

A deposit once you accept. The balance lands in your account after an inspection.

  4. We collect the car

Only after your funds have cleared, from your home or work, anywhere in Australia.

What affects your HiLux offer

No online calculator knows which HiLux you have or how it has been used. These are the things a valuer asks about, and what you can do about each one.

  • Generation and grade

A 2025 HiLux could be a Gen 8 or a Gen 9, and a WorkMate cab-chassis and a Rogue dual-cab are bought by different people. Give us the generation, grade, any SR+ or SR5+ pack, cab style, 4x2 or 4x4, and auto or manual.

  • V-Active 48V

Toyota's 2024 update added a 48V mild-hybrid system, optional on the SR and standard on SR5 and Rogue 4x4 variants. Two 2024 SRs can differ here, so tell us if yours has it. A Toyota dealer can confirm it from the VIN.

  • Canopy, tray, tow bar and bull bar

A tow bar, tub liner and a quality canopy or tray tend to hold or add value on a HiLux. Lifts, engine tunes and heavy modifications narrow the pool of buyers. Keep the fitting invoices. More in what accessories and modifications do to resale value.

  • Logbook servicing

A logbook stamped on time is the simplest proof that a hard-working ute has been looked after. Keep the receipts for tyres, brakes and anything done between services.

  • Open recalls

Recalls that can touch a 2021-on HiLux include REC-005004 (rear plate bracket), REC-005030 (passenger airbag sensor) and REC-006578 (Gen 9 power steering). The fix is free at a Toyota dealer. See how to check open recalls.

  • Kilometres and work use

Lower kilometres for the year generally mean a stronger offer. Towing wear, tub or tray damage and underbody scrapes are checked at inspection, so mention them upfront and there are no surprises.

Selling a HiLux: what to know first

What buyers check on a 2021-on HiLux, how the Gen 8 and Gen 9 differ, the recalls to clear and how finance is handled.

To get a fair offer for a 2021-on HiLux, describe it exactly, clear any open recalls and have the logbook and accessory invoices ready. A licensed dealer can then price it by phone, pay a deposit, inspect it and pay the balance into your account before the ute is collected.

This is the short version for HiLux owners. For more on the generations, the DPF class action and ANCAP ratings, read our full guide to selling a used Toyota HiLux.

Which HiLux do you have?

Most HiLuxes built from 2021 to 2025 are the eighth generation in its facelifted form. Toyota put that facelift on sale in August 2020 with a stronger 2.8-litre turbo-diesel: 150kW, with 500Nm in the auto and 420Nm in the manual. Towing capacity went up to 3,500kg. Some lower grades were also sold with a 2.4 diesel or a 2.7 petrol.

In 2024 Toyota added its V-Active 48V mild-hybrid system and refreshed the styling. It was optional on the SR and standard on SR5 and Rogue 4x4 variants.

The ninth-generation HiLux is all-new, with exterior and interior design led by Toyota Australia. It went on sale here in December 2025. The 2.4 diesel and 2.7 petrol are gone, leaving the 2.8 diesel as the standard engine, and the 48V system is fitted to SR autos and above. There is also a battery-electric HiLux.

ANCAP lists Gen 9 builds from August 2025, so a HiLux built or first registered in late 2025 could be either generation. Describe yours by generation as well as year.

Gen 8 facelift Gen 9
On sale August 2020 to 2025 December 2025 on
Engines 2.8 diesel, plus 2.4 diesel or 2.7 petrol in some lower grades 2.8 diesel or battery-electric
48V mild hybrid From the 2024 update, on 4x4 autos SR autos and above
Grades WorkMate, SR, SR5, Rogue, Rugged X, GR Sport WorkMate, SR, SR5, Rogue, Rugged X

Grades and options that change the offer

The Gen 8 facelift launched as WorkMate, SR, SR5, Rogue and Rugged X, with SR+ and SR5+ option packs. The Rugged X left the range in the 2023 update, and the GR Sport arrived in 2023 as the new flagship, with the 2.8 diesel lifted to 165kW and 550Nm.

Grade is only half the description. Cab style, cab-chassis or tub, 4x2 Hi-Rider or 4x4, and auto or manual each put your ute in front of a different group of buyers. A WorkMate single-cab with a steel tray and a Rogue dual-cab are both a HiLux, but they are bought for different jobs.

Accessories matter too. A tow bar, tub liner and a quality canopy are expected on a HiLux and tend to hold or add value. Suspension lifts, aftermarket wheels and engine tunes narrow the pool of buyers, because each one is something the next owner has to accept. Everything bolted on also adds weight, and that comes off the payload.

So when you ask for an offer, give the full picture. A made-up example: “2022 HiLux SR5 4x4 dual-cab auto with the SR5+ pack, tow bar and canopy, 68,000 km”. If you paid for a pack or accessories, keep the original invoices handy.

What a buyer checks on a HiLux

Whoever buys your ute will work through much the same list. Use it before anyone comes to look.

Check What they look for What to have ready
Grade and pack The badge matches the spec Original sales invoice
Servicing Logbook stamped on time Logbook and receipts
Recalls No open safety recalls Toyota job cards
Dash No DPF or other warning lights Recent service notes
Work wear Tow bar, tub, tray and underbody An honest account of how it was used
Accessories Fitting quality and any approvals Fitting invoices and engineering paperwork
Finance A security interest on the PPSR Your lender’s payout figure
Keys Both keys present Both keys

Buyers sometimes ask about the DPF class action. It covers HiLux, Prado and Fortuner diesels acquired between 1 October 2015 and 23 April 2020, so a HiLux first sold in 2021 or later sits outside it. A buyer will still check that no DPF warning light is on.

Recalls to clear before you sell

Run your VIN through the government’s vehicle recall search before you ask for offers. These are the HiLux recalls we know of that can touch a 2021-on ute:

Recall Which HiLux The problem
REC-005004 (Nov 2021) About 156,800 built 2015 to 2021 Rear number-plate bracket can crack on corrugated roads
REC-005030 (Dec 2021) 1,367 from 2021 Passenger seat sensor may stop the airbag deploying
REC-006578 13,390 Gen 9 built 28 August 2025 to 24 February 2026 with a Toyota Genuine bull bar or nudge bar plus light bar Electric power steering ground may be refitted incorrectly, risking sudden loss of steering assist

Recall work is done free at a Toyota dealer. While you are booked in, ask the dealer to check the VIN for open service campaigns too, because those are not always listed on the government site. Keep the job card. Our guide to checking open recalls before you sell explains how to read the search results.

When to sell: the Gen 9 effect

The Gen 9 arrived with a higher entry price than the model it replaced. When a new generation costs more, a late, low-kilometre example of the outgoing model can look like good value to buyers who don’t want to pay new-car money. That can work in favour of a tidy Gen 8.

Buyers may also ask about safety ratings. ANCAP rated the Gen 8 five stars in 2019, and that rating’s six-year validity ended in December 2025. ANCAP says a rating “remains with the vehicle for its lifetime”, so a rated Gen 8 built during that period keeps its five stars with a 2019 datestamp. The Gen 9 was rated five stars in 2025, valid to December 2031, for every variant except the Rugged X.

Kilometres matter more than the calendar. We buy HiLuxes 2021 or newer with 100,000 km or less, so if yours is getting close to 100,000 km, selling before it crosses keeps it inside our buying range. If it has already gone past, send it through anyway and we will tell you straight away if we can help.

Finance, ABN and paperwork

Plenty of HiLuxes are still under finance when they are sold. When you sell to us, we deal with your lender directly to pay out the loan, then pay any equity into your account. That usually takes 2 to 3 business days to settle. If you owe more than the offer, the difference has to be covered before settlement. Ask your lender for a payout figure first, because it can differ from the balance in your banking app. Our page on selling a car under finance explains the steps.

If the ute was bought through an ABN, talk to your accountant before you sell. The ATO says private cars are generally exempt from capital gains tax, but its definition of a car covers vehicles designed to carry less than one tonne. If the HiLux was used in a business, ask about GST and depreciation as well.

We prepare the sale paperwork and help with the transfer of ownership. We’ll make sure your notice of disposal is done correctly; in most states it’s a quick online form. Usually no roadworthy or safety certificate is needed when you sell to us, but rules differ by state and we confirm what applies on the call.

Selling your HiLux to us

Sell Your Car Australia is run by Autohaus Australia Pty Ltd, a NSW licensed motor dealer (MD 077404). Your offer comes from a valuer who has priced cars since 1992 and supplies dealerships nationwide.

You get a genuine offer by phone, not an online estimate. If you accept, the deposit is often paid the same day. The inspection happens after that, at a time and place that suits you. The balance goes into your bank account, and the ute is collected only after you confirm the funds have cleared. We arrange collection anywhere in Australia. The valuation is free, there’s no obligation and no fees come out of the offer.

Your money clears before your keys leave your hand

Private sales go wrong at the handover: fake bank transfers, cheques that bounce, cars driven off before the money lands. We turned the order around so that never happens to you.

“I was paid before Autohaus took possession of my car, which from my experience normally doesn’t happen.”

  • Balance cleared before pickup

The rest is paid into your account. We collect only once you confirm it has cleared.

Questions about selling your HiLux

Straight answers. If yours is not here, call us and ask.

1800 73 55 73
Do you buy HiLux cab-chassis and single-cab utes?

Yes. We buy every HiLux body style: single-cab, extra-cab and dual-cab, with a tub or a tray, in 4x2 or 4x4. Tell us the cab style and what is fitted on the back when you send it through, and add photos of the tray or canopy if you can.

Does it matter whether my HiLux is a Gen 8 or the new Gen 9?

It matters for the description, not for whether we buy it. The facelifted Gen 8 covers most HiLuxes from 2021 to 2025, and the all-new Gen 9 went on sale in Australia in December 2025, so a late-2025 HiLux could be either. Your original invoice will show which you have, or a Toyota dealer can check the VIN.

Should I get HiLux recall work done before I sell?

Yes, if you can get a booking. Recall work is free at a Toyota dealer, and a finished job removes a question at inspection. Check your VIN on vehiclerecalls.gov.au first, and if a recall is still open when you sell, tell us on the call.

Do you buy modified or lifted HiLuxes?

Send it through with a full list of modifications and we will tell you straight away if we can help. Big lift kits, oversized tyres and engine tunes narrow the pool of buyers, and some modifications need engineering certification to be road legal, so they can lower the offer rather than raise it. Keep the original parts if you still have them.

My HiLux is a work ute bought through my ABN. Can I sell it to you?

Yes. Plenty of HiLuxes do work duty, and we price them on what they are. If your business claimed GST credits or depreciation on the ute, talk to your accountant before you sell, because the sale can have tax consequences. We can't give tax advice.

What cars are you buying right now?

We are buying cars, utes, SUVs and 4WDs built in 2021 or later with 100,000 km or less. Any make is welcome, and we have strong demand for European and prestige models, dual-cab utes and family SUVs. If your car sits just outside that, send it through anyway and we will tell you straight away whether we can help.

When do I get paid?

Once we agree on a price, we can often pay a deposit the same day. After an inspection, the balance is paid into your bank account by bank transfer. The car is collected only after you confirm the funds have cleared, so you are never left without the car and without the money.

Can I sell my car if I still owe money on it?

Yes. We deal with your lender directly to pay out the loan, then pay you any equity left over. Cars under finance usually take 2 to 3 business days to settle. If you owe more than the car is worth, the difference has to be covered before settlement, and we show you the numbers before you decide.
