The process is the same whatever you drive. Corey sold us his LandCruiser from Melbourne, Spiros was paid before his car was collected, and Roy’s sale involved working with his lenders. Here they are in their own words.
Within 10 minutes of my enquiry I was contacted by Dean. It all happened in less than an hour from the initial enquiry. I had a deposit in my bank account that night.
“I was paid before Autohaus took possession of my car, which from my experience normally doesn’t happen.”
Spiros Mercedes-Benz SLK 250 “They helped me through the transaction of a high value car and made it very pleasant. From paperwork and working with the lenders, to a personal touch.”
Roy Mercedes-Benz GLE 450

How selling your RAV4 works
Four steps. Your part takes about a minute, and you are paid before the car leaves your driveway.
Tell us about your car
Make, model, year and kilometres. A minute on the form, or a quick call.
Get a genuine offer
We call you, check a few details and make a cash offer. Accept it or walk away.
Get paid
A deposit once you accept. The balance lands in your account after an inspection.
We collect the car
Only after your funds have cleared, from your home or work, anywhere in Australia.
What affects your RAV4 offer
No online estimate knows which RAV4 you have. These are the things a valuer asks about, and what you can do about each one.
Hybrid or petrol
Until mid-2024 most XA50 grades came as a petrol or a hybrid, and Toyota closed petrol orders on 5 June 2024. A buyer prices the exact variant, so tell us which engine yours has, not just the badge.
Grade and drive
GX, GXL, XSE, Cruiser, Edge or GR Sport, and 2WD or AWD. Equipment changes a lot from grade to grade, and on the XA50 the only petrol AWD was the 2.5-litre Edge.
Generation
A 2021 to 2025 RAV4 is the XA50. The new generation went on sale in 2026 and looks quite different. Go by the build date on the compliance plate. Our RAV4 selling guide explains the changes.
Open recalls
Recall REC-006390 covers Toyotas built from 2022 to 2025, including the RAV4 and RAV4 Hybrid: the instrument display can stay blank. The fix is a free software update at a Toyota dealer. See how to check for open recalls.
Kilometres for the year
Lower kilometres for the car’s age generally mean a stronger offer. We buy RAV4s with 100,000 km or less. If yours has done more, send it through anyway and we will tell you straight away if we can help.
Service history and extras
A complete logbook, both keys, the owner’s manuals and, on a plug-in hybrid, the charging cable that came with the car. Anything missing is noted at the inspection, so mention it on the call.
Free and no obligation. Or call 1800 73 55 73.

Selling a RAV4: what to know
What buyers check on a RAV4, the changes since 2021 that affect value, the recalls to clear first, and how finance and paperwork work.
What buyers check first on a RAV4
A RAV4 buyer wants four things pinned down before talking price. Which generation is it? Is it petrol, hybrid or plug-in hybrid? Which grade, and does it drive the front wheels or all four? Two RAV4s from the same year can be very different cars once you add those up. That’s why a listing or an online estimate that just says “2022 RAV4” tells a buyer very little.
After that come the questions every car gets: kilometres, condition, service history, open recalls and whether there’s finance owing. One line can answer most of them. A made-up example: “2023 RAV4 Cruiser Hybrid AWD, 48,000 km, Toyota logbook, cluster recall done, two keys, finance with a bank.” Have a line like that ready and the valuation call is mostly confirming details rather than guessing at them.
Which RAV4 do you have? 2021 to 2026 at a glance
Every RAV4 built from 2021 to 2025 is the fifth generation, often called the XA50 after its model code. CarExpert reported that the sixth generation was due in Australia in the first quarter of 2026, and it’s on sale now. Within the XA50 years, two changes matter when you sell: the March 2022 update and Toyota closing petrol orders on 5 June 2024.
| Period | Generation | Engines and drive |
|---|---|---|
| 2021 to early 2022 | XA50 | 2.0 petrol 2WD, 2.5 petrol Edge AWD, or hybrid 2WD or AWD on the GX, GXL and Cruiser |
| March 2022 to mid-2024 | XA50 | XSE added as a hybrid-only grade, Edge gains a hybrid, GX manual dropped |
| Mid-2024 to 2025 | XA50 | Hybrid only |
| 2026 on | New generation | Hybrid FWD or AWD, plus a plug-in hybrid in the XSE and GR Sport |
Toyota badged the XA50’s front-drive models 2WD and calls the new generation’s FWD. They mean the same thing. If your car was bought or registered around a changeover, go by the build date on the compliance plate rather than the year on the rego papers.
Grades and options that make a difference
On the XA50, the grades ran GX, GXL, XSE, Cruiser and Edge. CarExpert describes the Edge as the top-spec grade. It was AWD only, and until the March 2022 update it came only with the 2.5-litre petrol. The XSE arrived in that update as a hybrid-only grade.
On the new generation, the line-up is GX, GXL, Edge, XSE, Cruiser and GR Sport. At launch the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) was offered only in the XSE and the GR Sport, and the GR Sport is a PHEV with AWD only. At launch the hybrid Edge and XSE were AWD only, while the GX, GXL and Cruiser hybrids came in FWD or AWD.
Things to tell the valuer:
- The full variant name, as written on the rego papers or the original invoice.
- Dealer-fitted accessories, such as a tow bar or roof racks, and the receipts if you have them.
- Any aftermarket changes, such as different wheels, and whether you kept the original parts.
- Both keys, the owner’s manuals and, on a plug-in hybrid, the charging cable that came with the car.
Tell us what is fitted and what is missing on the call, so the offer is for the car as it really is. If you’re weighing up extras, our guide to accessories, modifications and resale value covers which ones buyers care about.
Recalls to sort out before you sell
Run your VIN before you sell. Two recalls are worth knowing about on late-model RAV4s:
- REC-006390, published on 22 July 2025, covers 69,586 Toyotas built from 2022 to 2025, including the RAV4 and RAV4 Hybrid. A memory device in the instrument cluster can deteriorate so the display stays blank. The fix is a software update.
- REC-006742 covers 5,925 RAV4 plug-in hybrids from the 2026 model year, CarExpert reported in October 2026. A fault in the motor generator control unit can turn on warning lights and put the car into fail-safe mode, or cause a loss of drive. Toyota is contacting owners in writing to arrange a free repair at a dealer.
Recall work is free at a Toyota dealer. Enter your VIN in the government’s vehicle recall search, book anything still open, and keep the job card as proof. A blank instrument display is hard to explain on a test drive, so the cluster fix is worth doing early. If the work can’t be finished before you sell, tell us the recall number on the call. Recall lists change, so check your own VIN rather than relying on any list, this one included. Our guide to checking open recalls before you sell walks through the search.
When to sell: the new RAV4 and what’s coming
The new generation arrived in 2026 with a higher starting price than the model it replaced. It gives used-RAV4 buyers another option to compare against. A dearer new model can make a late XA50 look like good value, but it doesn’t set your car’s price. Kilometres, condition and history still do most of the work.
A few things to keep in mind on timing:
- CarExpert has reported that a lower-priced GXL 2WD plug-in hybrid is due in early 2027. That widens the choice for buyers who want to plug in, which matters most if you’re selling a new-generation PHEV.
- We buy RAV4s with 100,000 km or less. If yours is getting close, our guide to selling before 100,000 km explains why the timing can matter.
- If you’ve ordered a new car, line up the sale of your RAV4 so you aren’t left without one while you wait for delivery.
Selling a RAV4 with finance owing
If you still owe money on your RAV4, the lender’s security interest shows up on the PPSR, so the loan has to be paid out as part of the sale. We deal with your lender directly to pay out the loan, then pay you any equity. Settlement usually takes 2 to 3 business days. If you owe more than the car is worth, the negative equity has to be covered before settlement.
Ask your lender for a payout figure before the call. It’s often different from the balance in your banking app, because it can include interest up to the payout date and any early payout fees in your contract. If your RAV4 is on a novated lease, there’s a residual to settle, and many people sell the car to cover it. Check your lease contract and talk to your provider first. Our page on selling a car under finance has the detail.
On the paperwork side, we prepare the sale paperwork and help with the transfer of ownership. We’ll make sure your notice of disposal is done correctly. In most states it’s a quick online form. Usually no roadworthy or safety certificate is needed when you sell to us; rules differ by state and we confirm on the call. Keep your insurance active until the car has been collected.
Selling your RAV4 to us
Sell Your Car Australia is run by Autohaus Australia Pty Ltd, a NSW licensed motor dealer (MD 077404), with a valuer who has priced cars since 1992 and supplies dealerships nationwide. We buy RAV4s that are 2021 or newer with 100,000 km or less, whether hybrid, petrol or plug-in. If yours sits outside that, send it through anyway and we’ll tell you straight away if we can help.
You get a genuine offer by phone, not an online estimate. The deposit is often paid the same day. The inspection happens after you accept, at a time and place that suits you. The balance goes into your bank account, and the car is collected, anywhere in Australia, only after you confirm the funds have cleared. The valuation is free, there’s no obligation and no fees come out of the offer.
How it works sets out each step, and the free valuation form takes your RAV4’s details in about a minute. For the background on each generation and what a valuer asks, read our guide to selling a used RAV4. Selling another SUV as well? The same process applies to any SUV. You can also call 1800 73 55 73.
Your money clears before your keys leave your hand
Private sales go wrong at the handover: fake bank transfers, cheques that bounce, cars driven off before the money lands. We turned the order around so that never happens to you.
“I was paid before Autohaus took possession of my car, which from my experience normally doesn’t happen.”
No strangers at your door
No test drives, no tyre-kickers, no one turning up and haggling on the driveway.
Deposit first
Accept our offer and we pay a deposit, often the same day, before anyone inspects the car.
Balance cleared before pickup
The rest is paid into your account. We collect only once you confirm it has cleared.

Questions about selling your RAV4
Straight answers. If yours is not here, call us and ask.
1800 73 55 73Do you buy petrol RAV4s as well as hybrids?
Yes. We buy petrol, hybrid and plug-in hybrid RAV4s on the same terms: 2021 or newer, with 100,000 km or less. Toyota stopped taking orders for petrol RAV4s on 5 June 2024 and the new generation has no petrol-only version, so a petrol RAV4 will be an XA50. Tell us the exact variant, such as GXL 2WD petrol or Cruiser Hybrid AWD, so we price the right car.
Do you buy the new-generation RAV4, including the plug-in hybrid?
Yes. A 2026 RAV4 is within what we buy, in any grade from the GX to the GR Sport. If yours is a plug-in hybrid, keep the charging cable that came with it for the inspection, and check whether recall REC-006742 applies to your car.
My RAV4 has an open recall. Can I still sell it?
Yes. Recall work is free at a Toyota dealer, so book it before you sell if there is time and keep the job card. If it cannot be done in time, tell us the recall number on the valuation call so the offer is made with the full picture. You can check your VIN on the government recall site, vehiclerecalls.gov.au.
What details do you need to price my RAV4?
The year, the grade, whether it is petrol, hybrid or plug-in, 2WD or AWD, the kilometres, the service history and whether there is finance owing. A few photos help. We can price most cars from those details, and the inspection happens after you accept.
I am buying a new RAV4. Should I trade mine in or sell it separately?
Get both numbers and compare them. A trade-in figure is often folded into the changeover price, so ask the Toyota dealer for the trade-in value on its own, in writing. Then compare it with a genuine offer from a buyer who only wants your car.
What cars are you buying right now?
We are buying cars, utes, SUVs and 4WDs built in 2021 or later with 100,000 km or less. Any make is welcome, and we have strong demand for European and prestige models, dual-cab utes and family SUVs. If your car sits just outside that, send it through anyway and we will tell you straight away whether we can help.
When do I get paid?
Once we agree on a price, we can often pay a deposit the same day. After an inspection, the balance is paid into your bank account by bank transfer. The car is collected only after you confirm the funds have cleared, so you are never left without the car and without the money.
Can I sell my car if I still owe money on it?
Yes. We deal with your lender directly to pay out the loan, then pay you any equity left over. Cars under finance usually take 2 to 3 business days to settle. If you owe more than the car is worth, the difference has to be covered before settlement, and we show you the numbers before you decide.
Do you pick the car up?
Yes, anywhere in Australia, and we arrange the transport. Once your funds have cleared, our transport partner collects the car from your home or workplace at a time that suits you. Key drop-off can be arranged if you cannot be there.
