Can you sell your car while you're already overseas?

Guide cover: Selling from overseas

Key takeaways

  • You can sell a car from overseas if a trusted person in Australia can give the inspector access. At collection they hand over the keys, or a key drop-off can be arranged.
  • Keep your Australian bank account open and check you can log in from abroad. The balance is paid by bank transfer, and the car goes only after you confirm the funds have cleared.
  • Check you can lodge your state's notice of disposal from where you are. Service NSW can't send login codes to an international mobile number, and WA and Tasmania give sellers only 7 days.
  • Keep the car insured until it has been collected, and if you owe more than it's worth, start moving the shortfall early so it's covered before settlement.

Yes, you can sell your car while you’re overseas, as long as someone in Australia can give access to the car and keys. You also need to be able to sign, check your bank account and tell your state’s transport authority about the sale from where you are.

Selling to us makes this simpler, because the car is collected only after you’ve confirmed the money has cleared. This guide is for people who have already left, or who fly out before the sale can finish. Still in Australia with a departure date? Start with selling your car before moving overseas, because some steps are easier before you board.

What can you do from overseas, and what needs someone in Australia?

Most of a sale to us happens by phone and in your banking app, so you can do it from anywhere. The car needs someone on the spot, and in some states so does part of the paperwork. When you send your details, say you’re overseas and which number and hours suit you.

Step Who does it Where from
Sending details and photos You, or someone near the car Anywhere
Taking the offer by phone You Wherever you can take a call
Receiving the deposit You Wherever you are
Giving the inspector access Someone you trust Where the car is
Confirming the balance has cleared You Your banking app
Handing over the keys Someone you trust, or a key drop-off Where the car is

The order never changes: a genuine offer by phone, a deposit (often paid the same day), an inspection after you accept, the balance into your bank account, and collection only after you confirm the funds have cleared.

You usually won’t need a roadworthy or safety certificate when you sell to us, which helps from abroad. Rules differ by state, and we confirm what applies on the call.

Who should look after the car and keys?

Choose one person in Australia who can reach the car at short notice, such as a partner, relative, neighbour or building manager. Their jobs:

  • Give the inspector access. The inspection happens after you accept, at a time and place that suits you, so plan it around their week.
  • Take fresh photos if yours are old, including the dashboard with the ignition on so the odometer and any warning lights show.
  • Check the car starts. A car that has sat for weeks may have a flat battery.
  • Take out the e-tag, garage remote and personal items, and leave every key with the logbook.
  • Hand over the keys at collection, but only once you’ve told them the funds have cleared.

If nobody can be there on the day, key drop-off can be arranged, and we collect anywhere in Australia. Our guide to car collection and key drop-off covers how to leave keys safely.

Give your helper one rule in writing: the car doesn’t move until you say the money is in your account. If a driver turns up early, or plans change by text from a number they don’t know, they check with you first.

How do you sign the sale paperwork from another country?

We prepare the sale paperwork and help with the transfer of ownership. On the call, ask how each document will reach you and how to sign it, and keep copies.

State forms vary. In the NT, the notice of disposal can be emailed to the Motor Vehicle Registry, but it must be signed by seller and buyer and include the engine number. In the ACT, both sign the back of the rego certificate before the seller notifies Access Canberra. NSW and WA have paper forms that can be posted.

If someone in Australia is to sign for you, they need legal authority, not just your say-so. The NSW Government lists “travelling or living abroad” as a reason to appoint an attorney, who can sign legally binding documents and operate bank accounts for you. It also sets two limits: a general power of attorney becomes invalid if you lose capacity to manage your own affairs, and an enduring power of attorney made overseas is “not recognised in NSW”. Rules differ between states, so get legal advice on what the car’s state will accept before anyone signs for you. Our guide to selling a car with power of attorney goes into more detail.

How do you get paid, and know the money is real?

The balance is paid into your bank account by bank transfer, and the car is collected only after you confirm the funds have cleared. You can make that check in your banking app from any time zone.

Before you accept an offer, make sure of three things:

  1. Your Australian account is still open. Leave it open until the car has gone and any finance has settled.
  2. You can log in from abroad. If your bank texts security codes to an Australian mobile, check that number still works overseas, or switch to an app-based option.
  3. You know what “cleared” means. The money shows in your own banking app or statement. An email, a screenshot or a “transfer processing” message is not cleared funds.

Robert, from Melbourne, wanted the sale of his Mercedes-Benz GLE 350 d finalised before a holiday in New Zealand, and it went through while he was away. He wrote: “I put my faith in the transaction going through while away on holidays and to his word Dean was honest, transparent and came through without any issues.”

How do you lodge the notice of disposal from abroad?

We’ll make sure your notice of disposal is done correctly, but in most states lodging it is the seller’s job. From overseas, the hard part is rarely the form. It’s logging in to the online service, or getting a paper form there in time.

In NSW, lodging online needs a MyServiceNSW Account, your NSW driver licence or Photo Card, the rego details and, for a dealer sale, the dealer’s licence number and business name (ours is MD 077404). Without a NSW licence or Photo Card, you use the paper form, which can be posted. Every MyServiceNSW Account needs multi-factor authentication. Service NSW’s advice on logging in from overseas is blunt: “We cannot send the MFA code to an international mobile number.” Use an Australian mobile that still works abroad, the Service NSW app or an authenticator app instead. Service NSW recommends setting up at least two methods, so add a second one now.

State Seller’s step and deadline How you can lodge it
NSW Notice of disposal within 14 days; Service NSW says do it straight after the sale MyServiceNSW if your login works, or the paper form by post
VIC Notice of disposal within 14 days Online through myVicRoads
QLD Transfer the rego out of your name within 14 days, free for the seller Online only for a sale to one person with a Queensland licence or customer reference number, not a business; otherwise at a customer service centre
WA Notify within 7 days DoTDirect online, or the MR9 form by post
SA Notice of disposal within 14 days Paper form, because online lodging isn’t available when the buyer is interstate
TAS Disposal notice within 7 days The online portal needs a Tasmanian licence; otherwise by email or post
ACT Notify Access Canberra as soon as you sell Upload through the ACT Digital Account, or by post
NT Notice of disposal within 14 days, signed by both parties Email or post to the Motor Vehicle Registry; there’s no online portal

Whichever state the car is registered in, try its online service from where you are before you accept an offer. A form posted from overseas can take a while to arrive, and WA and Tasmania allow only 7 days.

Victoria, Queensland and WA add steps when the buyer is interstate, as we are unless your car is registered in NSW. VicRoads recommends cancelling the rego and removing the plates. Queensland says its registration can’t be transferred to another state or territory, and its online transfer doesn’t cover a sale to a business, so the steps it points to are at a customer service centre. For a Queensland car, tell us early and check with Transport and Main Roads how to handle this from overseas. In WA, the licence usually can’t move with the car: for a buyer who isn’t a WA resident, WA’s selling advice is to return the plates to a DTMI service centre or regional agent and sell the car unlicensed. Any refund of the unused licence depends on the plates going back before the sale. We’ll walk you through the steps for your car before pickup, but handing in plates may be a job for your helper.

What if there’s still finance on the car?

You can still sell. We deal with your lender directly to pay out the loan, then pay you any equity. Cars under finance usually take 2 to 3 business days to settle, so build that into your helper’s plans. Our page on selling a car under finance has the detail.

From overseas, allow extra time for two things:

  • The payout figure. Ask your lender for one, or give us permission to request it. Ask early how they’ll confirm your instructions while you’re abroad.
  • Any shortfall. If you owe more than the car is worth, the difference has to be covered before settlement. An international transfer may take longer to arrive than one between Australian banks, so start it early. We show you the numbers before you decide.

A novated lease works differently, because the finance company owns the car until the lease is paid out. Our guide to selling a car on a novated lease mid-term covers moving overseas partway through.

What happens to rego, insurance and tolls while the car waits?

Keep your insurance active until the car has been collected, even once you’re paid. Check your policy still covers the car with someone else holding the keys. After collection, cancel or move the policy, and ask whether unused premium is refunded, because that varies between insurers.

Don’t cancel the rego, let it lapse or take the plates off without checking with us first, because the right step depends on your state. VicRoads and Queensland both tell sellers to take the car off any rego direct debit.

Once your helper has taken out the e-tag, the NSW Government’s advice is to “remove the e-tag from the vehicle and delete the registration number from your account”. Do the same with whichever toll account the tag is on.

Keeping personalised plates? South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania all say that has to be sorted before the sale. In South Australia it means getting standard plates at a Service SA centre, which is hard to arrange from overseas, so raise it on the call before you accept.

Should you tell buyers you’ve already left?

Tell us, yes. Telling a stranger on a classifieds site needs more thought.

On Whirlpool, one member advised someone heading overseas not to tell dealers they had to sell, saying it weakens your price. That’s one person’s opinion, and it’s about haggling: a buyer who knows your deadline can wait you out.

The bigger problem with a private sale from abroad is trust. Scamwatch warned in 2021 that car-ad scammers often claimed to be defence personnel being deployed and asked for payment through fake escrow services. To a careful buyer, a genuine seller who’s overseas, with a friend showing the car, can look much the same. You’d also be running test drives through someone else while watching for the overpayment and multiple-PayID scams Scamwatch lists.

With us, say so on the call. The offer is a genuine offer from a licensed dealer, not an online estimate, and knowing you’re overseas lets us plan the inspection and collection around your helper and your time zone.

A checklist for selling from overseas

When What to do
Before you ask for an offer Choose your helper; test your bank and transport-service logins from abroad; find your rego and loan details
Before you accept Decide about personalised plates; in WA, plan who returns the plates; in Queensland, check the transfer steps; ask how the paperwork will be signed
Once you’ve accepted Take the car off any rego direct debit; your helper gives the inspector access
When the balance arrives Check your own banking app, then tell us and your helper it has cleared
Collection day Your helper hands over every key, or the key drop-off goes ahead
Within your state’s deadline Lodge your notice of disposal and keep a copy
Once the car has gone Cancel or move your insurance; remove the car from your toll account

Sell now, or wait until you’re back?

Waiting has costs: rego and insurance on a car nobody drives, a battery going flat, and a car that’s months older each time you put it off. Selling from abroad works best with a reliable helper, a working Australian bank login and a state form you can lodge from where you are. If one of those is missing, fix it first.

If your car, ute, SUV or 4WD is 2021 or newer with 100,000 km or less, we can make you a genuine offer by phone. Sell Your Car Australia is run by Autohaus Australia Pty Ltd, a NSW licensed motor dealer (MD 077404), and by a valuer who has priced cars since 1992. Older or higher-kilometre car? Send it through anyway and we’ll tell you straight away if we can help.

The valuation is free, with no obligation and no fees taken out of the offer. If time is short, see how to sell your car fast.

Questions sellers ask

Can someone else hand over the car for me?

Yes. A partner, relative, friend or building manager can give the inspector access and hand over the keys at collection, and key drop-off can be arranged if nobody can be there. Handing over keys isn't the same as signing for you, though. Anyone signing transfer documents in your name needs legal authority, such as a power of attorney.

Can I be paid into an overseas account?

The balance is paid by bank transfer into your bank account, so the simplest path is to keep your Australian account open until the sale has settled and then move the money yourself. If you've already closed it, raise that on the call before you accept, so you know how payment will work.

Do I need to be in Australia to lodge a notice of disposal?

In most states, no: there's an online service, a form you can post, or both. The catches are practical. NSW's online service needs a NSW licence or Photo Card and won't send login codes to an international number, Tasmania's portal needs a Tasmanian licence, and South Australia needs a paper form when the buyer is interstate. Queensland's online transfer doesn't cover a sale to a business, so check with Transport and Main Roads early. Test your access before the sale so you can meet the deadline.

Will I keep getting fines or tolls after I've left?

Recording the sale promptly is what protects you. Service NSW says to lodge the notice of disposal immediately so you aren't held responsible for the buyer's parking or driving fines. VicRoads warns that if you don't submit one, you may be liable for fines and tolls linked to the car after the sale. Remove the car from your toll account as well.
