What sellers say

Corey sold us his LandCruiser 200 Series from Melbourne and had a deposit in his account that night. Spiros was paid before we took his car, and Roy's sale meant working with his lenders. Here they are, in their own words.

Within 10 minutes of my enquiry I was contacted by Dean. It all happened in less than an hour from the initial enquiry. I had a deposit in my bank account that night.

How selling your BT-50 works

Four steps. Your part takes about a minute, and you are paid before the car leaves your driveway.

  1. Tell us about your car

Make, model, year and kilometres. A minute on the form, or a quick call.

  2. Get a genuine offer

We call you, check a few details and make a cash offer. Accept it or walk away.

  3. Get paid

A deposit once you accept. The balance lands in your account after an inspection.

  4. We collect the car

Only after your funds have cleared, from your home or work, anywhere in Australia.

What affects your BT-50's offer

No online estimate knows how your BT-50 has been used. These are the things a valuer asks about on the call, and what you can do about each.

  • 1.9 or 3.0 diesel

The 1.9 arrived with the entry XS grade in late 2021. The 3.0 makes more power and torque, which matters to anyone towing a van, boat or trailer. Engine, grade, cab and drive set the starting point for the offer.

  • Pre or post facelift

The facelifted BT-50 went on sale in January 2025 with new lights, an easy-down tailgate, more safety features and an automatic-only range. Your build date tells us which side of it your ute sits.

  • Fuel hose recall

BT-50s built 2021 to 2023 are covered by a fuel hose recall (REC-005839), and the repair is free at a Mazda dealer. Run your VIN first. See checking for open recalls.

  • Accessories and modifications

Tow bars, tub liners and quality canopies tend to hold or add value on a ute. Big lifts, engine tunes and non-compliant mods narrow the buyers. More in accessories and resale value.

  • Mazda warranty remaining

Mazda's new-car warranty runs five years with unlimited kilometres, so the earliest 2021 utes are reaching the end of it now. Have the start date ready for the call.

  • Service history and kilometres

A complete logbook is the best proof that a working ute has been looked after. Lower kilometres for the year generally mean a stronger offer.

Selling a BT-50: what to know first

What a buyer checks on a BT-50, what has changed since 2021, which recalls to clear and when to sell. The short version, before you call.

What a buyer checks on a BT-50

Every BT-50 buyer, private or trade, works through the same short list. The answers decide where your ute sits against others of the same year, so have them ready before you call or list it.

What a buyer asks Where to find the answer
1.9 or 3.0, and which grade Purchase contract, service book, or a Mazda dealer from the VIN
Cab, body and drive Purchase contract and rego papers
Pre-facelift or facelift Build date, and features such as the easy-down tailgate
Open recalls A VIN search on the government recall site, plus dealer invoices
Service history The logbook and any Mazda dealer records
Warranty start date The service book, or ask Mazda
Finance owing A payout letter from your lender
Accessories and modifications Receipts, and engineering paperwork where it was needed

The physical checks follow the paperwork. Expect a close look at the tub or tray, the tow bar and wiring, the underbody and the tyres, because they show how hard the ute has worked. Have both keys ready if you still have them.

Describe your ute the way a buyer searches for it. “2023 BT-50 GT dual-cab pickup, 4x4, tow bar and canopy, full Mazda logbook” says far more than “BT-50 for sale”, and it means fewer surprises at inspection.

How the BT-50 has changed since 2021

The current BT-50 went on sale in Australia in October 2020. It shares its underpinnings with the Isuzu D-MAX, including the 3.0-litre turbo-diesel, but it has Mazda styling, grades and warranty. Two changes since then shape how a used one is compared.

When What changed Why it matters when you sell
October 2020 Launch with the 3.0 turbo-diesel (140kW and 450Nm) in XT, XTR and GT grades 2021 utes are now the oldest in our buying range
November 2021 A 1.9 turbo-diesel and the entry XS grade added A 1.9 XS is compared with other entry-level utes, not with a 3.0
January 2025 Facelift: new bumper, grille and LED lights, easy-down tailgate, 9-inch screen from the XTR up, more safety features, manuals dropped Earlier utes now sit beside newer ones with more equipment

The facelift added lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring and trailer sway control. Because the facelifted range is automatic only, a manual BT-50 was built before it. Reports differ on whether the 1.9 XS carried on after the facelift, so if you have a 2025 XS, go by your papers rather than assume.

Your ute’s equipment hasn’t changed, but the comparison has. No published data yet shows how far the facelift moved used BT-50 values, so be wary of anyone quoting a figure.

Grades, engines and options that move the offer

The grade sets the starting point. The range runs XS, XT, XTR, GT and SP, from the entry-level work ute to the top of the range. Cab and drive come next: a 4x4 dual-cab pickup and a 4x2 single-cab cab chassis suit different buyers and are priced on their own terms.

The engine matters because the two suit different jobs. The 1.9 is the smaller, less powerful option and suits lighter loads and town work. The 3.0 has more power and torque, which counts for anyone pulling a caravan, boat or equipment trailer. If your 3.0 has a tow bar, wiring and a brake controller fitted, say so up front.

On accessories, ute buyers expect some extras:

  • Tend to hold or add value: tow bars, tub liners and quality canopies.
  • Tend to shrink the pool of buyers: suspension lifts, aftermarket wheels, engine tunes, and heavy or non-compliant modifications.
  • Worth keeping: receipts for every accessory, engineering certificates for any modification that needed one, and the original parts if you still have them.

Recalls to clear before you sell

Recall work on a BT-50 is free at a Mazda dealer, and any buyer can run your VIN on the government’s vehicle recalls site. These recalls cover BT-50s in or near our buying range:

Recall Which BT-50s The issue
REC-005839 Built 2021 to 2023 Fuel hose may chafe on the oil level bracket, risking a fuel leak and fire
REC-005070 Some 2021 utes Transfer case blanking plug
REC-000899 2020 to 2021 Rear seatbelt pretensioner connector

This list isn’t complete, and the fuel hose problem has more than one recall number with overlapping build years. Run your own VIN, book anything still open, and keep the dealer invoice that shows the recall number. A note saying “fuel hose done” doesn’t tell a buyer which recall was fixed.

If you can’t get a booking before you sell, don’t hide it. Tell the buyer, or tell us on the valuation call. Our guide to checking for open recalls before you sell explains how to read the results and show the work was done.

When to sell a BT-50

Three things decide the timing.

The warranty. Mazda’s warranty page describes five years with unlimited kilometres. A BT-50 first sold new in 2021 reaches five years during 2026, so the earliest utes in our range are at or near the end of their factory cover. The page doesn’t say whether the balance passes to the next owner, so ask Mazda before you use it as a selling point.

The kilometres. We buy BT-50s with 100,000 km or less, and a working ute can get there quickly. If yours is close, our guide to selling before 100,000 km explains why the number matters. Already past it? Send it through anyway and we will tell you straight away if we can help.

The rego. In NSW, most light vehicles more than five years old need a yearly safety inspection before rego renewal, counted from the compliance plate date. A 2021 BT-50 is reaching that point now.

Waiting doesn’t change which side of the facelift your ute sits on. It only adds age and kilometres.

Finance, paperwork and tax

Finance. You can sell a BT-50 that is still under finance. We deal with your lender directly to pay out the loan, then pay you any equity. That usually takes 2 to 3 business days to settle. If you owe more than the offer, the difference has to be covered before settlement. Ask your lender for a payout letter before you call, and see selling a car under finance for the steps.

Paperwork. We prepare the sale paperwork and help with the transfer of ownership. We’ll make sure your notice of disposal is done correctly. In most states it’s a quick online form. Usually no roadworthy or safety certificate is needed when you sell to us, but rules differ by state, so we confirm what applies to your ute on the call.

Tax. The ATO says private cars are generally exempt from CGT. If the ute was used in a business, talk to your accountant about GST. Our guide on whether you pay tax when you sell also covers why some utes fall outside the ATO’s definition of a car.

Selling your BT-50 to us

A private sale means answering the recall and warranty questions yourself, arranging test drives and making sure the money is real before the keys go. Selling to us is a shorter path.

You get a genuine offer by phone from a licensed dealer, not an online estimate. The business is run by a valuer who has priced cars since 1992 and supplies dealerships nationwide. If you accept, we pay a deposit, often the same day. The inspection happens after that, at a time and place that suits you.

The balance goes into your bank account, and we collect your BT-50 only after you confirm the funds have cleared. Collection is anywhere in Australia, arranged by us. The valuation is free, there is no obligation, and there are no fees taken out of the offer.

Our page on how it works sets out each step, or call 1800 73 55 73 with your engine, grade and kilometres to hand.

Your money clears before your keys leave your hand

Private sales go wrong at the handover: fake bank transfers, cheques that bounce, cars driven off before the money lands. We turned the order around so that never happens to you.

“I was paid before Autohaus took possession of my car, which from my experience normally doesn’t happen.”

  • No strangers at your door

No test drives, no tyre-kickers, no one turning up and haggling on the driveway.

  • Deposit first

Accept our offer and we pay a deposit, often the same day, before anyone inspects the car.

  • Balance cleared before pickup

The rest is paid into your account. We collect only once you confirm it has cleared.

  • A licensed dealer, on the record

Questions about selling your BT-50

Straight answers. If yours is not here, call us and ask.

1800 73 55 73
Do you buy the 1.9 XS as well as the 3.0 BT-50?

Yes. We buy BT-50s with either engine and in any grade, from the XS to the SP, as long as they are 2021 or newer, with 100,000 km or less. Tell us the engine, grade, cab and drive when you send it through, because those set the starting point for the offer.

My BT-50 is a pre-facelift model. Is that a problem?

No. We buy BT-50s built before and after the facelift that went on sale in January 2025. The facelifted range is automatic only, so a manual BT-50 is a pre-facelift ute. Give us the build date and the features it has, and we price the ute you actually have.

Should I get the fuel hose recall done before I sell?

If you can, yes. BT-50s built 2021 to 2023 are covered by a fuel hose recall, and the repair is free at a Mazda dealer. Run your VIN on the government recall site to see what is still open. If you can't get a booking before the sale, tell us on the call.

Does the Mazda warranty go to the next owner?

Mazda's Australian warranty page describes five years with unlimited kilometres, but it doesn't say whether the balance transfers to a new owner. Ask a Mazda dealer or Mazda Australia to confirm. Either way, have the warranty start date and the logbook ready for the call.

Do you buy BT-50s with a canopy, tray or tow bar fitted?

Yes. Tell us what is fitted when you send the ute through, and add photos if you can. Quality accessories such as a canopy, tray, tow bar or tub liner are taken into account when we price it. Heavy modifications can narrow the pool of buyers, so list those too.

What cars are you buying right now?

We are buying cars, utes, SUVs and 4WDs built in 2021 or later with 100,000 km or less. Any make is welcome, and we have strong demand for European and prestige models, dual-cab utes and family SUVs. If your car sits just outside that, send it through anyway and we will tell you straight away whether we can help.

When do I get paid?

Once we agree on a price, we can often pay a deposit the same day. After an inspection, the balance is paid into your bank account by bank transfer. The car is collected only after you confirm the funds have cleared, so you are never left without the car and without the money.

Can I sell my car if I still owe money on it?

Yes. We deal with your lender directly to pay out the loan, then pay you any equity left over. Cars under finance usually take 2 to 3 business days to settle. If you owe more than the car is worth, the difference has to be covered before settlement, and we show you the numbers before you decide.
