Selling a used Mazda3: engines, grades and what buyers check

Model guidesPublished 8 min read
Guide cover: Mazda3

Key takeaways

  • Name your Mazda3 in full: hatch or sedan, grade, engine and gearbox. G20 is the 2.0 petrol, G25 the 2.5, and the X20 and G20e were mild hybrids dropped in July 2023.
  • Manuals were also dropped in July 2023, so a manual Mazda3 is one of the earlier cars in our range. We know of no published data showing whether that helps or hurts its price.
  • Mazda's warranty terms say the five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty transfers to later owners. It starts from first registration or first retail sale, whichever came first.
  • Run your VIN through a recall check, book any open recall at a Mazda dealer, where the work is free, and keep every service invoice for the buyer.

Before you sell a 2021 or newer Mazda3, pin down exactly which one you have: hatch or sedan, grade, engine and gearbox. The range changed several times, and the manual and mild-hybrid versions are no longer sold new. A buyer will then check the VIN for recalls, the service record and how much of Mazda’s five-year warranty is left, which Mazda’s terms say passes to the next owner.

None of that is hard to sort out, and having it ready shortens the conversation with any buyer. Here’s what to check, in the order sellers usually ask.

Which Mazda3 do you have?

Start with four details: body, grade, engine and gearbox. Every Mazda3 range sold new since 2021 has offered the same 2.0 and 2.5 petrol engines, so the year alone doesn’t tell a buyer much.

Body. Mazda has sold the Mazda3 as a hatch and a sedan through this whole period, with the same grades and engines in each.

Grade and engine. Mazda puts the engine in front of the grade name, so the full name tells a buyer most of what they want to know:

  • G20 is the 2.0-litre petrol.
  • G25 is the 2.5-litre petrol.
  • G20e is the 2.0-litre with a 24-volt mild-hybrid system, sold only as the G20e Evolve.
  • X20 is Mazda’s Skyactiv-X engine with mild-hybrid assistance, sold only as the X20 Astina.

The grades run from Pure, Evolve and Touring on the G20 to Evolve (later Evolve SP), GT and Astina on the G25. So “2022 Mazda3 G25 GT sedan, auto” is a complete description. “2022 Mazda3, good condition” is not.

If you’re unsure, the purchase contract or the service book usually names the variant, and a Mazda dealer can confirm it from the VIN.

What changed in the Mazda3 range from 2021?

Two updates changed the range in ways a buyer notices, and a third added connected services. This timeline uses CarExpert’s price-and-specs reports for each update.

When sold new Grades and changes Gearboxes
2021 G20 Pure, Evolve and Touring; G25 Evolve, GT and Astina; X20 Astina Manual or auto with every engine
2022 update, in showrooms late 2021 G20e Evolve added; G25 Evolve became G25 Evolve SP Manual dropped from the X20 and from cars with the Vision Technology package
From July 2023 G20 Pure, Evolve and Touring; G25 Evolve SP, GT and Astina; X20 and G20e dropped Six-speed auto only
2025 update Mazda Connected Services added Six-speed auto only

The engines behind those badges are below. The G20, G20e and X20 outputs are as CarExpert reported them, and the G25 figures are from Mazda’s current Mazda3 page.

Engine Power and torque Sold new
G20, 2.0 petrol 114kW and 200Nm Throughout
G25, 2.5 petrol 139kW and 252Nm Throughout
G20e, 2.0 mild hybrid 114kW and 200Nm 2022 update to July 2023
X20, Skyactiv-X mild hybrid 132kW and 224Nm Until July 2023

A few details are worth putting in an ad if they apply. If yours is a G25 Evolve SP, use the SP in the name, because it replaced the plain G25 Evolve with the 2022 update. CarExpert reported that the July 2023 cars gained cylinder deactivation on the G20, and wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless phone charging and USB-C ports from the G20 Touring up.

Is the mild-hybrid Mazda3 coming back?

Probably not. Mazda dropped both the X20 Astina and the G20e Evolve with the July 2023 update, and Mazda Australia has told CarExpert that the mild-hybrid Mazda3 and CX-30 are unlikely to return. The CX-30, which used the same two mild-hybrid engines, lost its G20e and X20 versions in its 2024 update, CarExpert reported.

What does that mean if you own an X20 or G20e? A buyer who wants a mild-hybrid Mazda3 can now only find one used. We know of no published data showing whether that changes what the car sells for. Here’s where the line sits when you describe your car:

Fair to say Not backed by any published data
The mild-hybrid Mazda3 isn’t sold new any more Mild-hybrid Mazda3s are rising in value
The X20 makes 132kW and 224Nm An X20 will always be worth more than a G25 Astina
The G20e Evolve has the same outputs as the G20 Buyers pay extra for the hybrid badge
Mazda says a return is unlikely The X20 is a future collector’s car

The X20 Astina was the flagship while it was sold, so a buyer will set it against a G25 Astina of the same age. The G20e Evolve’s outputs match the G20 Evolve’s, so expect a buyer to compare those two closely as well.

Is a manual Mazda3 harder to sell?

Owners ask this, and the honest answer is that we know of no published data either way. What CarExpert’s price lists do show is when manuals were on offer.

In 2021, a manual was offered alongside the auto with every engine. The 2022 update dropped the manual X20 Astina and stopped offering a manual with the optional Vision Technology package. From July 2023, every new Mazda3 was a six-speed automatic.

So a manual Mazda3 in our range is one of the earlier cars, and a manual from the 2022 update won’t have the Vision Technology package. Two things are true at once. A buyer who can’t drive a manual won’t look at your car, and a buyer who wants a manual Mazda3 can only find one used.

Put “manual” in the first line of any ad so the right buyers find it. From there, the gearbox is one detail a buyer weighs alongside year, grade, kilometres, condition and history.

How do you check for recalls on your Mazda3?

Run your VIN rather than relying on a list. Recalls apply to specific build ranges, so only a search on your VIN tells you about your car, and that’s why this guide doesn’t list Mazda3 recalls. Buyers and dealers run the same search, so do it first.

  1. Find the VIN. It’s on your rego papers and on a plate inside the car.
  2. Search it on the government’s vehicle recalls site, or on Mazda’s own recall check, which also asks for the VIN.
  3. Book anything open. Recall work is free at a Mazda dealer, and a booking now beats an open recall on inspection day.
  4. Keep the job card. Put it in the glovebox with the service book.

If a recall can’t be done before you sell, tell the buyer up front. Our guide to checking open recalls before you sell covers the details.

Does Mazda’s warranty transfer to the next owner?

Yes. Mazda’s new vehicle warranty terms say the warranty is transferable to later owners, as recorded on the state vehicle register. In plain terms, the balance passes with the car. Mazda’s FAQ says the same thing: the warranty travels with the vehicle.

Mazda has given new cars a five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty since 2018, so every Mazda3 in our range was sold with it. The terms say it starts on the earlier of the date the car was first registered or first sold at retail.

Here’s a worked example with made-up dates. Say your Mazda3 was first registered in March 2022. Its warranty runs to March 2027. Sell it in October 2026 and the next owner gets about five months of factory cover. A car first registered in 2021 has reached, or is close to, the end of its five years.

The terms also ask owners to keep evidence that the car was maintained as the owner’s manual describes, so a complete set of service invoices matters to the next owner too. Our guide on whether remaining warranty increases a car’s value explains how buyers weigh it.

What does a buyer check on a used Mazda3?

Have these ready and the inspection holds fewer surprises:

  • Body, grade, engine and gearbox, matched to the VIN.
  • Whether the Vision Technology package is fitted, on grades where it was optional.
  • Logbook servicing up to date, with invoices that list the parts used.
  • The first registration date, so the buyer can work out the warranty left.
  • Your recall search result, plus job cards for any recall work done.
  • All the keys.
  • Tyres and alloy wheels, including kerb marks.
  • Paired phones cleared and, if you use Mazda Connected Services, the car removed from your account.
  • A payout letter from your lender if there’s finance owing.

Clearing the infotainment is easy to forget. Our guide to wiping personal data from your car walks through it.

What will a buyer compare your Mazda3 with?

Mostly other Mazda3s. Buyers line up cars of the same year, body, grade and engine, so a G25 GT is set against other G25 GTs of similar age and kilometres, not against a G20 Pure. An accurate description puts your car in the right comparison.

Some buyers will also price a new Mazda3. A new one comes with a full five-year warranty, and every Mazda3 sold new since July 2023 has been an automatic. Be clear about what your car has, such as the Vision Technology package or the higher grade, and how much warranty is left, so the buyer isn’t left to guess.

Selling your Mazda3 to us

Once you know your grade, engine, gearbox and warranty date, the choice is how much of the sale you want to handle. A private sale means answering those questions yourself, arranging test drives and making sure the money is real before the keys go.

Selling to us means a genuine offer by phone from a licensed dealer, not an online estimate. We buy Mazda3s 2021 or newer with 100,000 km or less, in any grade, body or gearbox, including the X20 and G20e. When you accept, we pay a deposit, often the same day, and inspect the car at a time and place that suits you.

The balance goes into your bank account, and we collect the car, anywhere in Australia, only after you confirm the funds have cleared. No fees come out of the offer, and we prepare the sale paperwork and help with the transfer of ownership. If there’s finance owing, we deal with your lender directly to pay out the loan, then pay you any equity. That usually takes 2 to 3 business days to settle, and any negative equity has to be covered before settlement.

Our sell my Mazda3 page sets out the process, or you can request a free valuation or call 1800 73 55 73 with your service book handy.

Questions sellers ask

Is a Mazda3 hatch or sedan easier to sell?

We know of no published data showing that one body sells faster or for more. Mazda has sold the hatch and sedan with the same grades and engines, so a buyer is comparing like with like. Many buyers have a body style in mind before they start looking, so state yours in the first line of any ad.

Does a manual Mazda3 sell for less?

As far as we know, nobody has published figures that answer this for the Mazda3. A manual narrows the field to buyers who drive one, but those buyers can only find a manual Mazda3 used, because the manual left the new range in July 2023. The gearbox is one detail a buyer weighs alongside year, grade, kilometres, condition and history.

Does servicing outside a Mazda dealer affect the warranty?

Mazda's FAQ says that if your car is serviced elsewhere, you should keep all evidence of the maintenance, including the parts used, because it may be asked for if a warranty claim is made. Keep those invoices with the service book. When you sell, hand them over so the next owner can show the same record.

Do I need a roadworthy to sell my Mazda3?

Rules differ by state. When you sell to a licensed dealer, the private-sale roadworthy or safety certificate rule usually doesn't apply, and we confirm what applies to your car on the call. If you're selling privately, check your state transport authority's rules before you list it.

Will you buy a Mazda3 older than 2021 or with more than 100,000 km?

We buy cars 2021 or newer with 100,000 km or less, and that covers every Mazda3 grade and engine in this guide. If yours is older or has done more kilometres, send it through anyway and we'll tell you straight away if we can help.
