Selling a used Isuzu D-MAX: transferable warranty and recalls

Model guidesPublished 10 min read
Guide cover: Isuzu D-MAX

Key takeaways

  • Isuzu's 6-year/150,000 km warranty (whichever comes first) can be transferred to the next owner, so most 2021 or newer D-MAXs still have factory cover to sell.
  • Run your VIN for the ECM stalling, steering shaft bolt and fuel hose recalls before you sell. The fixes are free at Isuzu UTE dealers.
  • Keep the warranty and service booklet, recall paperwork and accessory receipts together. Isuzu's warranty excludes trays and accessories.
  • Know your exact grade, engine, cab and drivetrain before you ask for an offer, especially on a 2024 facelift or a 2.2-litre 25.5MY.

Isuzu’s 6-year/150,000 km new vehicle warranty (whichever comes first) can be transferred to the next owner, so most 2021 or newer D-MAXs still have factory cover to sell. Before you sell, check the VIN for four recalls: an engine stalling fault, a steering shaft bolt and two fuel hose campaigns.

Does the Isuzu warranty go to the next owner?

Yes. Isuzu UTE Australia’s warranty summary covers D-MAX and MU-X vehicles with a warranty start date on or after 1 January 2019 for 6 years or 150,000 km, whichever occurs first. The same page says the warranty can be transferred to subsequent owners, and Isuzu itself says that may help keep resale value high. You can read the terms on Isuzu UTE’s warranty page.

Three details matter when you sell:

  • Trays and accessories are excluded. Isuzu’s summary lists trays and accessories as outside the new vehicle warranty. If your ute has an aftermarket tray, canopy or bull bar, keep the receipts and any warranty paperwork that came with those parts.
  • Roadside assistance goes with the ute, on its own clock. For eligible vehicles with a warranty start date from 1 September 2020, Isuzu’s roadside assistance starts with 13 months of cover. It renews for another 13 months with each scheduled service at a participating Isuzu UTE dealer, up to 7 years in total. Isuzu’s roadside assistance terms say the program is linked to the VIN and passes to the new registered owner on sale. How much is left depends on when the ute was last serviced at a participating dealer.
  • Selling doesn’t reset the clock. The six years run from the warranty start date. The next owner gets whatever is left, not a fresh six years.

For how buyers weigh remaining cover in general, see our guide on whether remaining warranty increases a car’s value.

How much warranty does your D-MAX have left?

Find the warranty start date first. Isuzu UTE’s owner FAQ defines it as the date the vehicle was first registered or, for a demonstrator, the date the dealer first put it into use. So if you bought an ex-demo D-MAX, the clock started before you took delivery. If you aren’t sure of the date, ask an Isuzu UTE dealer to confirm it from your VIN.

Then add six years. At 25,000 km a year, the date and the 150,000 km cap arrive together. A ute that averages less than that runs out of time first, and one that averages more runs out of kilometres first.

The table uses March start dates as examples. Swap in your own month.

If the warranty started Six years ends Time left in October 2026
March 2021 March 2027 About 5 months
March 2022 March 2028 About 17 months
March 2023 March 2029 About 2 years 5 months
March 2024 March 2030 About 3 years 5 months
March 2025 March 2031 About 4 years 5 months

Every row is also capped at 150,000 km on the odometer.

A worked example

Say your D-MAX’s warranty started on 15 March 2022 (a hypothetical date) and the odometer shows 70,000 km when you sell in October 2026. Cover runs to 15 March 2028 or 150,000 km. The next owner gets about 17 months or 80,000 km of factory warranty, whichever runs out first.

That’s a concrete point to make on a valuation call or in a private ad, with the stamped warranty and service booklet to back it up. “Still under warranty” is vague. “Factory warranty to March 2028” is something a buyer can check.

Which recalls should you check on a D-MAX?

Four recalls on the Australian Government’s recall register cover large numbers of third-generation D-MAXs.

Recall Covers The fault
REC-006052 149,048 D-MAX and MU-X, 2020 to 2024 Engine control module (ECM) software may cut engine speed and stall the engine.
REC-005647 15,542 D-MAX and MU-X, 2020 to 2022 The lower steering shaft bolt may be under-tightened and come loose, causing a loss of steering.
REC-006053 36,966 D-MAX, 2020 to 2023 The fuel hose may chafe on the oil level gauge bracket, risking a fuel leak and fire.
REC-005842 10,099 D-MAX, 2021 to 2023 The fuel hose may chafe on the oil level gauge bracket, risking a fuel leak and fire.

Recall work is free at an Isuzu UTE dealer service department, and the dealer can tell you from your VIN which campaigns apply.

For the two 2024 campaigns, REC-006052 and REC-006053, the recall notices say Isuzu UTE Australia will write to affected owners. If you bought your D-MAX second-hand, or have moved house since, a letter may never have reached you, so don’t wait for one.

These are safety defects: a stall, a loss of steering or a fuel leak. Don’t leave one open just because the ute seems to drive fine.

This table isn’t a complete list, so always run your own VIN at vehiclerecalls.gov.au. Our guide to checking open recalls before you sell explains the search step by step.

How do you prove the recall work is done?

A buyer who searches your VIN will see which recalls apply to your ute. Paperwork showing the work was done answers their next question before they ask it. Work through this checklist two or three weeks before you sell, so there’s time to book a dealer:

  1. Search your VIN at vehiclerecalls.gov.au. The 17-character VIN is usually printed on your rego papers, on a plate you can see through the base of the windscreen, and on a label inside the driver’s door frame.
  2. Find the letters and job cards. Look for recall letters from Isuzu UTE Australia and any dealer job card or invoice from the visit.
  3. Ask a dealer if you’re unsure. Call an Isuzu UTE dealer service department, give them the VIN and ask whether any campaigns are still outstanding. Ask them to email you the answer.
  4. Book in anything still open. The work is free, and a booking made now is better than an open recall on inspection day.
  5. Keep it together. Put the recall paperwork in the glovebox with the warranty and service booklet so it goes with the ute.

An open recall doesn’t usually stop you selling. If a dealer can’t fit you in before you want to sell, tell the buyer, or tell us on the valuation call, so it isn’t a surprise at the inspection.

Which D-MAX do you have?

A buyer prices the exact ute in front of them: year, grade, engine, cab style and 4x2 or 4x4. The third-generation D-MAX has been on sale in Australia since 2020, and it has changed enough since then that “2022 D-MAX” isn’t a full description.

When What changed
2020 Third-generation D-MAX on sale. Mazda’s BT-50, launched in October 2020, shares its underpinnings.
May 2024 Facelift at dealers from 1 May, with a redesigned grille and front styling. An 8-inch or 9-inch touchscreen depending on grade, now with wireless Android Auto as well as Apple CarPlay. A Gen4 stereo camera, adaptive cruise on every model (manuals included) and Rear Cross Traffic Brake. The X-Rider becomes a permanent grade. Engines unchanged.
November 2024 The Blade crew cab ute becomes available to order as the new flagship. Isuzu says Walkinshaw Automotive Group developed it, with a 29 mm suspension lift, all-terrain tyres and the 3.0-litre engine.
October 2025 25.5MY update: a 2.2-litre engine with an 8-speed auto joins the 3.0 in SX and X-Rider, and 3.5-tonne towing becomes standard across the range. Isuzu says manual transmission is no longer offered.

Isuzu’s facelift announcement lists the grades as SX, LS-M, X-Rider, LS-U, LS-U+ and X-Terrain, with the Blade added above them in November 2024. Isuzu’s current range spans single cab chassis, space cab chassis, crew cab chassis and crew cab ute bodies, in 4x2 and 4x4.

If you aren’t sure which grade you have, check your original purchase paperwork before you call for an offer. A 2024 D-MAX could sit either side of the facelift, so say which version yours is: the same grade name covers different equipment before and after the update.

Does the 2.2-litre engine change anything when you sell?

From October 2025, SX and X-Rider buyers could choose Isuzu’s 2.2-litre RZ4F turbo-diesel (120kW/400Nm) with an 8-speed auto, alongside the 3.0-litre 4JJ3 (140kW/450Nm). Isuzu’s announcement of the 2.2-litre also said 3.5-tonne towing was now standard across the D-MAX range.

For a seller, three things follow:

  • Name the engine. An SX or X-Rider from the 25.5MY update on may have the 2.2 or the 3.0, so check your purchase paperwork and say which one yours has. Getting this wrong means you’re being compared with the wrong utes.
  • Get the towing details right. Isuzu’s D-MAX page lists 3.5-tonne braked towing for all D-MAX models when fitted with a genuine Isuzu UTE tow bar or tow tongue kit and an electronic brake controller. Say which tow bar and brake controller your ute has. On a D-MAX built before this update, check the towing capacity for your exact model rather than assuming.
  • The 3.0 is still the stronger engine. It has more power and torque, which matters to buyers who tow heavy or carry big loads every day.

The 2.2-litre only arrived in October 2025, so a 2.2 D-MAX sold in late 2026 has most of its six years of factory cover still to run, unless it has done very high kilometres.

D-MAX vs BT-50: does the shared platform matter?

Mazda’s BT-50 (TF) went on sale in October 2020 built on D-MAX underpinnings with the 3.0-litre diesel. The fuel hose fault turns up in BT-50 recalls too: REC-006060 and REC-005839 cover 3.0-litre BT-50s built from 2020 to 2023.

Where they part ways is the warranty. A BT-50 is covered by Mazda’s five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty, not Isuzu’s, and Mazda’s warranty page doesn’t say whether the balance passes to a new owner. Isuzu’s does. On paper, a D-MAX and a BT-50 that started their warranties on the same day finish a year apart: the D-MAX has the extra year, while the BT-50 has no kilometre cap. If a buyer is cross-shopping the two, your warranty end date is a fair point to make.

If you own the Mazda instead, our guide to selling a used Mazda BT-50 covers its recalls and updates.

What does a buyer check on a used D-MAX?

Whether you sell privately or to a dealer, expect these questions.

  • Service history. A warranty and service booklet stamped on schedule, with receipts for any work in between.
  • Recall status. Proof the ECM, steering shaft and fuel hose campaigns that apply to your VIN have been done.
  • Warranty end date. The warranty start date, and the time and kilometres left.
  • Exact spec. Grade, engine, cab style, 4x2 or 4x4, and whether it’s pre- or post-facelift.
  • Accessories. Tray, canopy, tow bar, bull bar or lift: who fitted it, with receipts. A tow bar, tub liner or quality canopy makes a ute more useful to the next owner, while big lifts and engine tunes can put some buyers off. Our guide to accessories, modifications and resale value goes further.
  • Signs of hard work. Wear around the tow ball, scrapes underneath from off-road use, tub or tray damage, and uneven tyre wear.
  • Both keys and a clean dash. Any warning light needs an explanation before the inspection.

Getting a firm offer on your D-MAX

A D-MAX with warranty left, its recalls cleared and a stamped booklet is an easy ute to explain to any buyer. If you’d rather skip the ads and test drives, that’s where we come in.

Sell Your Car Australia, run by Autohaus Australia Pty Ltd (NSW licensed motor dealer MD 077404), buys cars, utes, SUVs and 4WDs 2021 or newer with 100,000 km or less. You get a genuine offer by phone from a licensed dealer, not an online estimate. Once you accept, a deposit is often paid the same day. The inspection happens at a time and place that suits you, the balance is paid into your bank account, and we arrange collection anywhere in Australia only after you confirm the funds have cleared.

If there’s finance owing, we deal with your lender directly to pay out the loan, then pay you any equity. That usually takes 2 to 3 business days to settle. If you owe more than the ute is worth, the difference has to be covered before settlement. The valuation is free, there’s no obligation, and no fees come out of the offer.

Questions sellers ask

Do I have to do anything to hand the Isuzu warranty to the buyer?

Isuzu's warranty summary says the cover can be transferred to subsequent owners and doesn't list a separate process on that page. Its roadside assistance terms say those benefits are linked to the VIN and pass to the new registered owner. Hand over the warranty and service booklet, your servicing receipts and any recall paperwork with the keys. If a buyer wants it confirmed, ask an Isuzu UTE dealer to check the warranty status from the VIN.

How do I know if my D-MAX had the ECM recall done?

Look for a recall letter from Isuzu UTE Australia about the engine stalling recall, REC-006052, and the dealer job card from the visit. If you bought the ute second-hand or can't find either, call an Isuzu UTE dealer service department with your VIN and ask whether that recall is still open. Recall work is free.

Is a 2.2-litre D-MAX worth less than a 3.0?

There's no single answer. The 3.0-litre has more power and torque, while the 2.2-litre arrived with the October 2025 update and Isuzu lists it at the same 3.5 tonnes braked towing, when fitted with a genuine Isuzu UTE tow bar or tow tongue kit and an electronic brake controller. Grade, cab, drivetrain, kilometres, condition and history all count, so tell the valuer exactly which engine your ute has.

Do you buy D-MAX utes older than 2021 or over 100,000 km?

We buy cars, utes, SUVs and 4WDs 2021 or newer with 100,000 km or less. If your D-MAX is a 2020 build or has more kilometres, send it through anyway and we will tell you straight away if we can help.
